IE 6 with our Windows 98 is a disaster

Lo

Please help me with this. Ever since installing IE 6 three
days ago I can't upload images to my homepage directory;
visit any EZBoards; can't edit or delete things in certain
places like some e-mail addies or my homepage directory;
in many places I can't submit forms; I can't use emoticons
at the boards I do visit; plus a lot of pages look like
crap. I read the Readme file for IE6 (a little too late I
guess!) and it says some servers aren't compatable with
it. They actually suggest (check for yourself!) that we
change our Privacy settings to "Allow All Cookies". That
is two settings below the 'recommended' safety level and
just check the Privacy Statements of every site we visit.
Yeah, right! Like they never lie or have spyware lurking
aroundthem. I'm very annoyed that MS would be so
irresponsible as to suggest this rather than warning
people about the incompatability problem at the download
site.
I've tried Add/Remove Programs to get rid of IE6 but no
matter which selection I choose (and Uninstall isn't one
of the choices) I get an error message that my program has
done an illegal operation and then Add/Remove Programs
closes and IE6 is still there, complete and screwing up
internet service. I've also tried downloading the older
version of IE but an error message comes up that there is
a network problem and the download has to stop. The same
thing happened when I got fed up and tried to download
Netscape instead. Is there a way to get out of this, aside
from saving everything on disks and reloading Windows?!

Hey, I don't think I ever knew that file was there. Lots
of interesting stuff! (Can you tell I had someone else
do the install and take responsibility for it?) Man, I
feel your pain, caught in that catch-22. It says that the
install has to go out on the Web in order to proceed with
the install; does that ever suck (in principle).

Does Netscape require going out to the Web during an
installation? Oops, wrong newsgroup for that. But if
it doesn't, then someone else can download the Netscape
installer module on their box, and then hand it over to
you.

... and it says some servers aren't compatable with it.

Does it? All I see is the UTF-8 issue. It reminds me of
my Netscape settings for 7-bit or 8-bit ASCII: it warned
you that some things might not work with 7-bit, other
things might not work with 8-bit. You know what they say
about standards: there are so many to choose from.
They actually suggest (check for yourself!) that we
change our Privacy settings to "Allow All Cookies".

Well, that's only if you want/need to get into those
sites. In fairness, the rest of the paragraph explains
that it's only a problem with unscrupulous sites (that's
my read of it). Your issue is with the Web site, not IE,
I think. They say for an intrusive site that you can't
live without, set that site as an exception ("Allow") and
keep the default privacy high for everyone else.

Good luck, I hope someone else has a solution that gives
you back your IE x, if that's what you want.

Cheers,
Ken

There is an "unsupported" way to strip Internet Explorer out of a Win98 system, if you're really bent on its removal. The authors claim that IE can also be reinstalled after purging it from the system. This is a freeware utility and can be found at:

Good luck.
