What determines how many sub-folders show up in the Content.IE5
folder? Why would there be more on some systems than on others? OS is
Win98SE w/ IE6, SP1.

Thanks.

Thanks.

There are normally four.
At approximately 25 MB IE adds four more.
Etc.

Thank you Frank for your reply.

If you would, I have another question.

My default location for this folder is in Windows, along with the
Cookies and History folder. Sometimes though when I close out before a
reboot, I look to dump any garbage leftover in Windows\Temp. Sometimes
I find those three folders in there (Cookies, History, Temporary
Internet Files). I delete them and things are OK upon the next reboot
(the system reminds me these are system folders, but I ignore the
warning and dump them anyway). Note that the default folders are still
in their normal locations, and IE settings for the TIF folder do not
change. I can usually tell when this has occured because when I go
back to a page I was just on, I get a slow re-download instead of a
fast cached refresh.

What would cause them to show up in there?

Go to Tools | Internet Options and click Settings in the Temporary Internet
files section.

I keep mine set for "Every visit to the page", but this does cause IE to go
and check for updates before laoding from cache.

I'm not sure I agree with you now on what you have said, after a bit
more investigation.

I have another machine that has 4 sub-folders in the Content.IE5, but
it is set to 62MB. So 25MB must not be the trigger point for creating
new sub-folders.

As for the second question, my concern is with the creation of the
additional Cookies, History, and TIF folders, not the cacheability.

Thanks for your responses though...

Does it actually have more than 25 MB?

Oh...you mean once it "fills" to 25MB, then 4 more folders will be
created...gotcha :-)!! Will more than 8 folders ever show up??? Is
there a limit???

I always "clear on exit", so I might not have noticed that on my home
machine, and I may never have gone over 25MB on the work one...

Is there an "optimum size" that IE likes to see for the TIF, or is
that totally optional?

OK...so now what about the folder movement???

I know of no limit, but you can start slowing IE down if you get more than
12 such folders. Then it's time to empty TIF since its purpose is to speed
IE up.

I always "empty on close".

I changed my cache size so that during long surfing sessions, the data
"should" remain in the TIF longer....500MB on a 40GB HD. Is there an
optimum size? I think MS defaults to 10% of disk...at 40GB though that
is a bit large...

Any Idea how MS decides how and when and where to move data from the
root folder into one of the Content.IE5 folders?

No idea on the moving folders??

The cached data is Always in one of the sub-folders in Content.ie5.
However, you cannot depend on Windows Explorer to tell you the truth about
what is where. No matter where you look in TIF, Windows Explorer will show
you the entire cached content.

Read the article on this page and you may decide to use the tool. I do and
no problems.

UTILITY: CacheSentry
This is a program that fixes serious bugs in the Internet Explorer cache
manager (versions 3.0 on up through and including Internet Explorer for
Windows ME, and IE5.5 SP1). This program basically takes over the job of
managing the cache from Internet Explorer.
