Last month I bought an emachines computer with Windows XP already installed
on it. Today, I discovered that my internet connection was not working on
this computer. I tried my modem out on my old computer and my modem and
connection is working fine. I called my DSL provider, and they walked me
through a process of typing in IP address, instead of web addresses, in the
address bar. Google and Yahoo both worked when I used an IP address, but
neither worked when i typed their www addresses. The guy on the phone told me
i have to reinstall internet explorer in order for it to work again, but all
the reinstallation methods I've seen require an XP disc. Any help would be
greatly appreciated.

Hi there,

According to your description, the problem seem not with IE, in case you are
using a router, then detach the DSL modem from the router and make a direct
connection between DSL modem and PC to see if the problem persists, however,
please follow the steps below:

1. Click Start, run, type "ncpa.cpl" (with out quotation marks) and click
OK.
2. Right-click on the "Local Area Connection" icon and click properties.
3. In the resulting window, click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP ) and click
properties.
4. Make sure that "obtain an IP address automatically" and select "Use the
following DNS server address" option is enabled. Type the primary ip address
for DNS server address as 4.2.2.2 and secondary IP address as 4.2.2.1.
5. Click OK.

Was it a brand new machine? Is it still under warranty?

Please expand on this. Does the machine work OK otherwise? What happens
when you try to go online? Post any error messages.

Do you have the Windows Firewall (or a third-party firewall) enabled?

Is a reliable anti-virus application installed and working properly on the
machine?

Are you fully up-to-date at Windows Update? Is Automatic Update turned on?

Take the machine back where you got it and demand that they either give you
a real WinXP SP2 CD or refund your money.
Assuming that it IS SP2, and it better be if you bought it a month ago, Go
to Start | Run and type

CMD
In the command window type
netsh winsock reset

Then go back to Start | Run and type

iexplore /rereg

Sounds like nameserver problems. Try Treewalk.
