IE 6 "Page Not Found" problems

OK, it's been 3 weeks of this, so I'm seeking help. I've looked through the
news groups, googled, checked the MS help base, tried some fixes, and I'm
not getting there.

About 3 weeks ago or so, I noted that when I'd go to a lot of sites, I'd see
"page not found" in a lot of the ads that are displayed on the page. Little
icons that they try to get you to click on would have blank squares with the
little "x" up in the corner. A large number of links that I would click on
to go to other pages would come up "page not found".

About the same time, I started noting that my "back" button would only work
about 30% of the time, and I'd have to right click on "back" and select.

Looked at any software that I had installed in the week prior to, and all I
had installed was, abcast, I think, for some radio stations in media player.

Tried some DNS resolution fixes, no luck.

Uninstalled abcast, did a registry clean, tried again. No luck.

Did a "repair" on the OS (Win XP Pro), tried again, no luck.

Ran virus check. Everything good.

Went to MS database, pasted in the command string they instructed, came up
with (can't remember file name) setup something-or-other "not found".

Repair again, still no luck.

I don't have IE listed on my add/remove(is this common for XP Pro?), so
there's no way to do a repair from there.

Any help appreciated.

Did you scan the computer for spyware? Download a program called:
"Ad-aware", which you can download from this website:
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/support/download/ to get rid of any spyware
on your computer..
After launching the program click on the link: "Check for updates
now..." to update the reference file and then run the program. Support
for this program can be found at this forum:

Do you have SP2 installed on the XP machine?

This may not apply, but...

Do you have entries in your hosts file, ala:
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm

I installed that hosts file on my sister's computer, and she began having
trouble with the search results from her Verizon home page. It seems
that one of the ad servers was also serving up some good stuff, as well.
A little "#" in front of one of the lines solved the problem. If you right
click the "page not found" area and choose properties, I think you can
find the host being blocked.

AdAware & SpyBot S & D both run on a regular basis. All updated before run.

Got it within an hour of availibility.

Thank-you, Fishface. This gives me new batteries for my cyber-flashlight and
I shall spelunk accordingly tonight.
