Can anyone direct me as to where to obtain the Internet
Explorer 6 Service Pack on disk for a Compaq computer
running Windows 98? Somehow files were deleted and it
can't be "repaired" Now I'm unable to access the internet
on this computer that has a network ethernet adapter for
TCI/IP connection. I can still see the network and my ip
address for the router but I can't get online. I know
everything is configured correctly and I've tried to fix
the problem by reinstalling the Operating System with no
luck. I figure the only thing left to try is to reinstall
Internet Explorer but that's kinda hard to download with
no connection. Please help, I've spent all day on this!

Have you setup your internet connection? if so and you still cannot get
online.
Is your modem trying? If not .... go to add remove programs and remove
it..... then reboot and windows should detect the new hardware....
NOTE... On my Compaq win98se
I bought a new modem. Compaq informed me that I would have to remove that
modem from my tower before doing a Quick Restore. Because a Quick Restore
rewrites the modem and everything to factory output. Thus it would be the
wrong modem and rewritten.... it will not work any longer.
Best I can do...... CherokeeCandy

I'm no techie, but this might work. As far as the service
pack, I can't say, but IE 6 is available FREE on all AOL
8.0 discs floating around the U.S. Do you have one laying
around or under a cup or anything? Click Start, Settings,
Folder Options, View and then select Show All Files.
Click OK. Insert AOL disc. I'm assuming based on the
email you use AOL?--The browser will say Internet Explorer
provided by America Online in the title bar if you install
it, but might still work anyway.-- You might have to
close out AOL's Install app. Then Browse to the AOL
disc. Find AOL80 folder. Then Browsers, then MSIE, then
MSIE698.exe. I don't think it will work if IE 6 is still
installed. Try restoring previous Windows configuration
under Add/Remove Programs Microsoft Internet Explorer 6
and Internet Tools first if you still have IE 6
installed. Afterwards you can go to windows
update...maybe they have a small SP update (highly
unlikely though; I tend to avoid WU because it wreaks
havoc on my-- I mean, THEIR-- OS).
