I was using IE 6 with a site open, then I tried to open another window and I
got an error message that says it must close IE (which never actually
opened). So I sent the error report and tried again, but with the same
outcome. I restarted my computer twice and even just shut it down and turned
it back on, but I continuously get the same message. I am on now using AOL
to seek help. I hope someone knows what I can try.

I have the exact same problem, it started about 9pm Mountain time zone or so.
I have tried restarts etc to no avail and am only able to get on the web via
aol, or when I open up my computer icon, it gives me access to an internet
address bar. This will open general web pages but if I try to open a nother
window I get the explorer error message. i have sent an email to microsoft
support. My machine was stable prior to the crasheswith the exception of an
auomatic update from micrsoft that occurred on the 23rd. Dont know if that s
the culprit or not , whn i unistalled it, it didnt fix the problem. Hopefully
someone else has solved the problem

Howdy,

I was having the exact same problem. Specifically what Peter said. I was
only able to access the internet by opening a folder in Windows and then
writing in an http in the address bar. and mine seemed to occur a little
after 11 ET as well.

anyways i just did a system restore from the first point before the 23rd.
and then updated my virus scanner and spyware killers.

ive got no clue how, why, or what happened but just doing a system restore
worked for me. thankfully i didnt have any data i wanted to save but that
should be easy enough to put on a disk before restoring.

later...

Heres the answer I got from microsoft help. I completed step 1 and it solved
the problem on my machine. I will do a scan later.

The issue can be caused by spyware and incompatible third party plug-ins. I
suggest you perform the following steps to troubleshoot the issue.

Step 1: Reload IE settings:

1. Open IE, click Tools and click Internet Options.
2. Click "Delete Files" and click OK when prompted to confirm.
3. Click "Settings", and then click "View Files". Delete all files in this
folder.
4. In the Settings window, click "View Objects". Delete all the objects in
this folder. If some objects cannot be deleted, please restart the computer
and try again.
5. Switch to the Advanced tab, click the "Restore Defaults" button and then
deselect "Enable third-party browser extensions".

Then click OK to quit.

Step 2: Use Ad-Aware to clean up spyware from your system:

a. Download and install Ad-Aware from the following page:
http://lavasoft.element5.com/support/download/

b. Click Start -> All Programs -> "Lavasoft Ad-aware SE Personal" ->
"Ad-Aware SE Personal" to start Ad-Aware.
(Note: If there is a popup box asking whether or not to check for definition
updates, please click OK and click Connect. Click OK to download and install
the latest definition, and then click Finish.)

c. Click the Start button in the Ad-Aware window, and then click Next to
start the scan.

d. After the scan is finished, click Next, click the check boxes on the
"Critical Objects" tab to select them, click Next, and the click OK to
confirm the removal. This will remove all found spyware objects. Restart your
computer. Does IE crash now?
