Hi All

Really strange problem at a site. We have a Windows 2000 Server that is
running Terminal Services. When standard users logon they cannot browse to
ANY search web site BUT when the admin logs on that account can. I have
looked into the hosts exploit (no) and Qhost trojan that symantec reports
about (no). I can find no reason why this is so. Any help would be
appreciated.

Can they browse the internet in general?? If they can it sounds as if some software
may be interfering. An ISA server can restrict access to urls based on group
membership. I would also run a parasite detection and removal program on it such as
AdAware being sure to update it's definitions before scanning which you can do after
launching the application. --- Steve

hi

yes, they can browse any other sites BUT search sites. i have run spybot
search and destroy, spy killer, norton, trend ... looked manually at the
registry, etc. no specific inidication of trouble. there is no blocking
with an ISA server. the weirdest thing is that the admin CAN browse these
sites.

i am at a loss.

I don't know either offhand. A hosts file with bogus entry can cause users to not
access legitimate websites but that should also affect the administrator unless the
administrator possibly does not have permissions to the hosts file. I would run
Ethereal on the computer while logged on as a user [ you might need to use runas to
run Ethereal] to see what is going on at the packet level as in is the request going
onto the wire and is dns name resolution being used [run ipconfig /flushdns first] .
Try booting into safemode with networking to see if it makes a difference. Also try
posting in an Internet Explorer Newsgroup. --- Steve
