Every time I try to access updates for Explorer or
Windows98 I receive a message advising that a problem has
been encountered and the program needs to close. I have
run Adaware/Spybot, no problems identified. Details of
the problem are; Appver 6.0.2800.1106 / ModVer
6.3.2800.1106 / Offset 00006e47. Any advice gratefully
received. Many thanks.

That's common. Go here: www.bigfix.com and download the free BigFix. It
will scan your system and advise you what you need from Microsoft. If you
want the update just click and it will deliver it to your desktop and
install it without going to Microsoft.

Thanks for that. Tried it, but no luck I'm afraid, the
problem persists.

Thanks for that. Tried it, but no luck I'm afraid, the
problem persists insomuch as the same thing happens e.g.
when I try to install the latest version of Adware, I can
download new definitions but when I try to install the new
release I am redirected to the download site but then
the 'problem' resurfaces and the program closes.

May sound simple, and you might have tried this already,
but make sure your Anti-Virus Program is updated and
current. A few of the viruses will cause similar
problems. You might have to download a fix for specific
viruses and www.symantec.com has most fixes available.
Usually have to run them in Safe Mode, too. Hope this
helps!
