Running XP SP2. Decided to try Firefox as the default browser. After
changing then found that the IE icon is gone from the desktop and I could
not find the IE program in program files or anywhere else.

Finally, did a system restore which caused allowed me to change it back to
the default but still no icon on the desktop and I still can't find IE in
program files.

What am I doing wrong? How do I get the icon back and where can I find the
program?

FireFox didn't do that to me.

Right click a blank spot on the desktop and choose Properties | Desktop |
Customize Desktop.

That did not happen when I installed Firefox; at least I don't recall that
it happened.

I am not sure if a system restore will undo the missing desktop icon for
MSIE.

I don't know if this will work for Windows XP, but it worked for me when I
wanted to remove the MSIE icon from my desktop; you just want to reverse my
action:

Start > Control Panel (I think you can get directly to the Control Panel in
Windows XP) > Internet Options > Advanced. In the "Browsing" section, almost
at the end (just above "Underline links"), see if you have "Show Internet
Explorer on the desktop", and if it is not checked; put a check in the box
if it does not have a check.

Keep in mind: that assumes that the choice is available on Windows XP. I am
giving directions base on Windows Me, so I may not be giving good advice.
