this usually happens after I type in one letter...I then close the program
and it gives me the program "end now" message which I click ok on and I have
to re-open. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

What if you right click the IE icon on the desktop and choose Start Without
Add-ons?
Or go to Start | All Programs | Accessories | System Tools | Internet
Explorer (No Add-ons).

Start by disabling AutoComplete for web addresses
If that helps, clear your History.

Otherwise check for spyware or other interfering third-party programs
(which was the intent of Frank's suggestion.)

BTW always disclose your OS and version when you need help.
E.g. Frank's suggestion was really only for IE7 users but IE6sp2
does have a related Manage Add-ons command in the Tools menu.
BHODemon (from DefinitiveSolutions) is a third-party tool which users
of other versions could try. Otherwise uncheck Enable third-party...
in the Advanced tab and test with that.

Note that all such suggestions are diagnostics or at most workarounds
not "fixes". E.g. they can help you isolate problem causes and depending
on the tool used, control them.

Good luck
