Good morning all,

I currently running 2 windows 2000 servers and 4 2003 servers and i am
having a problem with one of my 2000 servers. When ever i try to run windows
updates after i choose express or custom it will run for like 5 seconds then
bring up a [Error number: 0x80072EFD] error. i have followed microsoft's
steps to correct the problem but with no success. Also if i try and make any
changes within IE6 and i try and save the changes it freezes and stops
responding. Any suggestions?? i believe that it must be some IE setting and
the other 2000 server hasn't been effected and i normally update them at the
same time.

The '2efd' error is recorded as a result of a networking infrastructure
error. If you're trying to access Windows Update, it could be caused by a
bad DNS configuration, bad routing tables, a misconfigured proxy server or
firewall.

1. Can you reproduce this problem on any other system in this LAN?

2. Can you access any other Internet sites, including other sites at a
microsoft.com?

No, there is no particular site you should try, the mere fact that you can
access other websites is sufficient for the diagnostic step.

This surely sounds like an issue specific to this PC.

Next thing I would suggest is to check the HOSTS table and make sure it has
not been 'enhanced'. I'd also run a full anti-spyware and anti-virus scan on
the system.

The HOSTS table can be found in
%windir%\system32\drivers\etc\HOSTS

It should have one active line it it, for IP Address 127.0.0.1
