IE 6 is corrupt

While downloading a patch for Word, Active-x was also downloaded, corrupting
the IE 6 program files, killing any chances to access the internet. The
broadband connecton works with the ISP server, but IE does not work. The ISP
told me that IE was corrupt. I tried installing IE 6, SR1, but the PC tells
me a newer version is installed. How do I fix this? Where can I get the
latest version of IE? Can I uninstall IE and reinstall the new version? ?

Can you clarify that? What are the symptoms? What is Internet Explorer doing
or not doing? Any error messages? Which version of IE is installed? Which
version of Windows?
