I have an IE 6 install problem that is stopping my upgrading to a new
MB and completing a Windows upgrade .

Background Info:
I'm in the process of installing a new MB. I'm currently running
Windows 2000 Pro SP4, on a old 233 Pentium MMX MB. I've installed a
Gigabyte GA-7VY600-L, 2.4 GHz motherboard with a AMD CPU in a new
case. This MB uses the Via KT600 chipset. If I try to boot the
original HD (with Win 2000) from the new MB it gets a BSOD and a 7B/34
stop.

I think my problem is that the Windows 2000 I'm running does not have
any "generic hardware drivers" that will support the Via chipset on
the new MB.

I've downloaded the latest drivers for the chipset from the Via web
site. They are in a Install_Shield and self extracting format. I have
no way to install them until I get a basic OS running on the new MB.
The bootable CD included with the new MB sarts a set of Backup/Restore
Utilities.

There is a MS KB scenario #824125 that describes the process of
installing a new MB that requires updated IDE drivers.

This scenario has you start the original Win 2000 OS from the old HD
on the old MB. Once windows is up, you are to insert the Windows 2000
Pro Update CD and let it autorun. Select Install Windows 2000, then
select Upgrade.... When the process restarts the system, you are
power off and move the old HD to the new MB and then let the Upgrade
continue. This will cause the correct drivers to be loaded for the
chipset on the new MB...

The Problem:
When I successfully get windows runing on the old MB and autorun the
CD; I get a popup indicating that the upgrade cannot continue because
some existing software in not compatable... The DETAILS indicated
that the IE install is incomplete and to restart the system. A
program will be started to complete the installation.

I ran these steps several times, even tried to uninstall IE, but the
problem still occured. Then I download the latest version of IE6 and
ran the install. The process resuested to restart the system to
complete the installation. Following the restart, the installation
process continued with the IE and OL steps. These all completed
successfully.

I ran the Windows 2000 Update CD again and received the same failure
indicating that the IE install was incomplete.

I'm also in the process of going to XP. As a last attempt I ran the
XP Update CD. However, since this was started by booting, it did not
perform an update. As a result I lost all of the applications install
on 2000. I understand that if I run the XP CD from 2000 it will do
the update. BTW, the new system runs OK on XP, which sorta confirms
the missing
hardware dirvers...

Any suggestions will be appreciated...

As a general rule, if the motherboard is changed the Windows on the hard
drive will not boot. You will have to re-install.
