Mike S.

I've had this problem for a couple of weeks now and I'm
not sure if it's a virus on my computer or what, but it's
really annoying. I set my home page in IE 6 to be
http://www.microsoft.com, when I shut the computer down
and reboot it, the home page changes to
http://www.coolsearch.com, which is some sort of a search
engine website! I don't care for it and I don't want it,
and to say the least, I don't want anything on my own home
computer to intrude on how I want my computer to run.

Has anybody else seen this problem? I looked through the
Windows Updates and I'm not really sure what to use to fix
this problem. I am using Windows 2000 Professional, with
Service Pack 4 and I can't find anything on Microsoft's
website that would help in fixing this problem.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you.

Hi -

You have been hijacked. Nothing on Windows Update will
help you with this one ...

This is my first visit to the Microsoft forums. I don't
know how to tell if this post has already been replied to.

Anyway, here goes ...

The NOT SO GOOD/NOT SO COMPLETE ANSWER:

Download and run:
http://www.merijn.org/files/cwshredder.zip

The BETTER ANSWER:

Follow the instructions here:
http://www.spywareinfo.com/rd/faq

Then post here by clicking the 'New Topic" button:
http://forums.spywareinfo.com/index.php?showforum=7

I suggest you use the title "Mike has coolsearch" as your
new topic subject. If you follow the rules the odds are
95+% that the nice Forum Gods at spywareinfo.com will show
you how to rid yourself of this hijack. Certainly
cwshredder will be part of that. You may have other
hijacks/spyware also ...

If you are really new at all of this and are having trouble
understanding and following the steps in the FAQ see if you
can't get a knowledgeable friend to help you with the steps
in the FAQ.

The FAQ comes across kinda' heavy. Try not to be put off
by that. But, do post what they want in the way that they
want it. It makes it much easier for them to help you.

As I said above this is my first visit to the m$ forums. I
won't be reading replies in this thread, sorry.

Best of luck,
MrPete
