IE 6 has become balky

I have IE6 with XP Pro SP3. Over the last few days IE has become slow and
balky. The home page is slow to load up and new windows often never load or
go to the Cannot Open page. If I refresh the Cannot Open page the page
(e.g.- Google) may very well open. The more windows open, the less like it
is to complete loading up. BTW- OE6 seems to be working fine.

The network connection icon in the systray often shows that the outgoing
signal is not being reciprocated by incoming packets.

I have done all of the usual maintenance like Spybot, CCleaner and
HijackThis but I have come up with nothing. I have a firewall router and am
not running a software firewall. I use Avira antivirus. I have used msconfig
to temporarily turn off Avira, iTunes and other non-essential startups but
to no benefit. I am stumped.

My ISP acct is dynamic, not static. Wasn't sure how to ping that. I did ping
the router at TTL=64 but that is probably useless info.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. Larry

OH, I should mention that I do not have Google or any other toolbar
installed. I had made no software additions around the time that this
problem started. Thx

When all else fails, HijackThis v2.0.2
(http://aumha.org/downloads/hijackthis.exe) is the preferred tool to use (in
conjuction with some other utilities). HijackThis will NOT fix anything on
its own, but it will help you to both identify and remove any
hijackware/spyware with assistance from an expert. **Post your log to

If the procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting this
isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a local, reputable and
independent (i.e., not BigBoxStoreUSA or Geek Squad) computer repair shop.

Hi Robear,

I have scanned and scanned and scanned. I am free of spyware, malware and
parasites. On top of what I previously mentioned, I ran Ad-aware, LSPFix,
did another Avira scan and I checked Add-ons and Downloaded Programs Files.
Ran JavaRa, too. Clean and up to date..

Lastly, I ran a DSL Reports speed test and I got 1M to 2.5M/266-347Kb on a
1.5Mb/300Kb account. Good enough to not inhibit IE6?

Please, any suggestions? Larry

Should I try to uninstall IE6 and reinstall or is that a waste of time? If
so, how do I keep all of my emails, etc?

Thanks again, Larry

I haven't been asked to that. Seemed presumptuous. Here goes and

In IE6: Tools | Internet Options | Advanced
Uncheck Enable third-party browser extensions.

Hi Frank, I tried you suggestion below, but no benefit. I had my HiJackThis
log checked at WindowsBBS and it was declared clean, as expected. So, I
threw in the towel and reformatted... NOT!! I decided to use System Restore
and IE is back to its old self again. Sometimes not knowing is less
important than the struggle itself. Thanks for everyone's efforts.

As an update, I found that numerous Earthlink users were having similar
issues. I am having EL send me a new modem and I just found a useful
newsgroup entry on DNS issues. I know that this is specific to EL but there
are a lot of EL users out there.

Change your DNS settings in Network Connections to:

207.69.188.171 (west coast)

207.69.188.172 (east coast)

(If you're west of the Mississippi, use the west coast DNS server as your
primary and the east coast as secondary. And vice-versa for those of you in
the eastern U.S.) They have made a huge improvement in connectivity so
far!!!

The link for the source of this info is:
http://blogs.earthlink.net/2006/09/more_info_on_dead_domain_handl.php

This articles source is this:

I hope that others find this helpful.
