Hi cjonz :-)

Try the following and see if it helps:

There is a FAQ about the SWF plugin there.

Flash & Shockwave not working

A few of things could contribute to the problem. Have you checked your
firewall to see if the ad-blocker or Flash blocker is set to on or block?
Also, there are several Pop-up blockers that will block Flash unless you
turn it off. I had POP-UP Blocker and it would not open Flash at all, and
it took me a while to figure out what was doing it When I unchecked the
Kill Flash it stopped. Some Flash has pop-ups and the blockers will see
them as ads or and kill it any way.

Also, if you have SpywareBlaster installed, be sure you have Kill Flash
unchecked - Open SpywareBlaster - Tools - Click on Flash Killer then uncheck
"Switch off Flash Player" or in v3.1 Disable and block Macromedia Flash (4X
5X & 6X) in Internet Explorer.

or..........................

Disable Flash Player

See: Disable Flash: http://faq.ozoneasylum.com/446/

or..............

Remove Flash, including all registry entries for it. Reboot then go to
Macromedia's site. Since it is Flash based you should get the dialog to
install Flash. Use the removal information at their site here:

or.........

Enable Flash in SP2

Internet Options> Advanced> Security> Check "Allow active content to run in
files on My Computer"

You will, of course, be giving up some of the security provided by SP2.

You can also make My Computer visible in Internet Options> Security to allow
additional tweaking.

Computer" security zone"

If these steps do not resolve your problem, please post back to this thread
with the details and any error messages.

Hope this helps

Thanks, I will try those. Here's some more background since you seem pretty
savvy. I have my ActionTec DSL firewall at basic, I do not have SP2 firewall
on at all. I have SP2 PopUp Blocker turned off, i run adaware and SpyBot but
no IE tweaks I know of set up on those either. Internet security zone set at
custom w/all proper Java/ActiveX allowances made as well. This has really
driven me nuts and I'm really thankful for some new direction.
thanks

PS in addition Flash movies work, like at macromedia.com, but embedded
objects that are flash driven within a page (like foxnews and nascar, et al)
are just blank empty spaces - the rest of the content is visible and
functional.

Hi cjonz :-)

Let us know how the information here works, or doesn't, and we can go from
there if necessary. :-)

I am having the exact same problem that cjonz described - especially related
to nascar.com. If I take the address of the first large ad at the top of
nascar.com and paste it into a new browser window, the ad displays. But it
refuses to display from the nascar.com page - just a blank box. On the
nascar.com homepage, there are at least 5 or 6 blank boxes for me.

I uninstalled Ad-Aware, Spybot, ZoneAlarm - no change. I disabled the
Windows firewall - no change. I uninstalled Flash and Shockwave, rebooted
and reinstalled from Macromedia's site - no change. I uninstalled Google
Toolbar (and its popup blocker) - no change. I disabled XP's popup blocker -
no change. I checked the box for "Allow active content to run in files on My
Computer" - no change.

I've tried everything Jan Il suggested and nothing has made a difference.
I'm about ready to reinstall XP and SP2.

FIXED!! Well, mostly.

In XP, look for file C:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts. If you rename
that file (I changed it to hosts.bk2), then ALL the ads appear on nascar.com.
This file blocks certain addresses from working.

Before I renamed the file, I found one line in it for one of the ad sites
that nascar.com is trying to load - ar.atwola.com. When I removed that line
from the hosts file, then the ar.atwola.com ad loaded on nascar.com.

Probably the "smart" thing to do is only remove the lines from the hosts
file which are blocking things you want to see. In other words, renaming the
file allows ALL the sites in it to be accessible on your computer - something
you may not want. My hosts file has around 1000 lines.

This hosts file must have been built by one of the ad blocking programs I've
installed, but uninstalling the program did NOT remove or empty the hosts
file?
Just a guess...

I found information about this hosts file at:

http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm
