I have a Lycos Mail account but I am unable to open the "mail.lycos.com"
page.
The error message says "Network Error
Unable to read URL from host login.mail.lycos.com: no
response from server".
Sometimes I get another error that says ""lbdauth.lycos.com:
no response from server".

Host files have been renamed to OldHosts.
Cookies, History and Temp files removed.
Firewalls and Anti-Virus shut down.
Security settings set to Low.
Privacy settings set to accept all cookies.
I can Ping the site from the Command Prompt.

You are not alone:

Is the machine on a network? May your firewall's settings be interfering?
Can you successfully access the page from another machine? Have you tried
http://login.mail.lycos.com/ ?

I tried the link you suggested and it did not work; "Unable to read
URL........." was the message.
There are now 2 units connected to a router and the one with Win98 can
connect to the Lycos
site and the unit with WinXP cannot.

I tried removing all firewalls and Anti Viruses but that didn't help.

Thanks

Which link? At least three were given.

In case it was the Google Groups link that you had problems with
here is my nslookup for it. Note that it may be an alias.

<example>
Name: groups.google.akadns.net
Addresses: 216.239.37.147, 216.239.37.99, 216.239.37.104
Aliases: groups.google.com
</example>

Try doing an nslookup yourself before IE needs to do it.
If you don't have nslookup try at least a ping -n 1 for hopefully
the same effect.

BTW is there a typo in that lbdauth.lycos.com you mentioned?
That just gets "non-existent domain"

Good luck

The LYCOS link.

Might have been LDBAUTH.
