IE 6 & Dreamweaver Error

Christine

I just migrated to a brand new sys. Since I own Win2000Pro
& Office 2000Pro and had no probs with them and all my
other progs on my last sys, I opted to keep them (if it
ain't broke...) I'm still unconvinced on the need to
upgrade to XP. :P

Anyway, upon setup, I accidentally installed IE 6.0,
without realizing that I had IE 5.5 on my last sys.
Immediately, I encountered an annoying and buggy prob when
using Dreamweaver 3.0--IE 6.0 does not recognize DW's
method of displaying temporary internet pages and insists
on displaying an error page (page cannot be found) and
opening the temp files in a *new ie window* every single
time I try to preview a web page that I'm working on.
MAJOR ANNOYANCE. :P (This was *not* occurring with 5.5.)

Once I searched the web and found out that this was the
issue (which is really odd and annoying, because,
apparently, IE 5.0 had this same problem AND MICROSOFT
KNEW ABOUT IT & FIXED IT IN 5.5), I uninstalled back to a
prev version of IE, which is IE 5.0. Now I've spent two
hours searching for the 5.5 update, because MS has
eliminated it from their site (another major annoyance, if
you ask me--why eliminate it before they've got the kinks
worked out of 6.0??)

My recommendation is to wait on 6. If you've got 5.5+
working just fine with no bugs, why hassle it just now...?
I mean, take a look at the messages here...notice *a few*
related to bugs and problems...??

In the meantime, anybody else encounter this issue with 6?
If so, did you find a fix for it? If not, does MS know and
are they working on it? And, finally, I need 5.5--any
suggestions?

Thanks. :)

Well...at the risk of upsetting you, you might consider upgrading to
Dreamweaver 4 or MX...? <ducking> I think you'd find the updated versions to
not only be more robust, but more compatible with IE6 from a design
standpoint.

IOW, designing a website based on legacy browserware will eventually hurt
you. Not only will you not be able to take advantage of the latest site
development and browser technologies, but you'll also end up behind the
learning curve when it finally comes time to abandon the old for the new. As
a case in point, here's a sampling of the browser versions we're seeing on
our site (top ten):

Browser %

1. MSIE 6.0 57.55

2. MSIE 5.0 14.56

3. MSIE 5.5 13.79

4. Netscape 6.0 4.14

5. MSIE 6.0 (AOL) 1.89

6. Netscape 4.7 1.36

7. MSIE 6.0 (MSN) 1.10

8. MSIE 5.5 (AOL) 1.03

9. MSIE 5.2 1.01

10. MSIE 5.1 0.90

Hope this helps.
