I'm running IE 6 with windows XP home. On some web
pages IE6 crashes to the desk top sometimes as soon as
the page address is typed and the go button or return is
pressed. I have downloaded and installed all current
patches for IE6 and XP. Some pages including some with
flash intros load and run fine. I have checked for
virus's with norton 2003 which is also updated. Sites
like Yahoo and google work fine.

Any assistance you could provide on this matter
would be greatly appreciated.

A. See

B. You may need new video drivers. Check the site for your video board
manufacturer. Meanwhile you can do the following:
1. Use the default mouse pointers.
2. Turn down your color depth. (Right click the desktop and choose
Properties | Appearance | Settings) Some people find that increasing color
depth helps.
3. Turn down your graphics hardware acceleration. (For Win 98, Start |
Settings | Control Panel | System | Performance | Graphics button) You will
see little, if any, performance degradation.
4. Turn off your desktop wallpaper.

If these make the problem go away you need new video drivers.

If you have an ATI video board, try adding these lines to System.ini

Been having similar problems on win 2k. Found on some
sites I have to type in the http:// string before www.etc
and it all works fine. Not found a permanent solution yet.

From Mike Burgess.

Verify the following entries are correct in the Registry:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\URL\DefaultPre
fix]
@="http://"

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\URL\Prefixes]
"ftp"="ftp://"
"gopher"="gopher://"
"home"="http://"
"mosaic"="http://"
"www"="http://"

Grego,
Some program (usually spyware\parasite) may have overridden the URL prefix
setting?

Includes: Repair the corrupted or altered (spyware) HTTP prefixes
See section: Various Registry Fixes = "RepairDefaultPrefix.reg"
[or - manually]
Open Regedit to the following locations and verify the below default
entries:
Start | Run (type) "regedit" (no quotes)

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\URL\DefaultPre
fix]
@="http://"

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\URL\Prefixes]
"ftp"="ftp://"
"gopher"="gopher://"
"home"="http://"
"mosaic"="http://"
"www"="http://"

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\URLSearchHooks]
"{CFBFAE00-17A6-11D0-99CB-00C04FD64497}"=""

Note: edit as needed, *always* Export before editing.

Thanks for the help. Ran Spybot search and destroy
software and it found one. Have just checked the registry
and all is correct.

Cheers.
