IE 6 Crashes on update page

When I connect to Windows (or Office) update, IE crashes
with the "IE has had to close ..." message. I have re-
installed Office and the IE SPs, to no avail. How do I
get around this Catch-22?

The only error message that I get is in the "IE has
encountered an error ..." page, where the details specify
exception 0cx0000005. There is, of course, loads of
additional information, but I don't know what of it is
significant.
