IE 6 crashes/Msvcrt.dll fault

B

b.blankenship

Sometimes when I open a secure frame within an online
email link, I get an error message that "EXPLORER caused
an invalid page vault at module Msvcrt.dll" and then IE
shuts down.

Per the Microsoft support page, I updated all my MS
Libraries. I still have the same problem.

I run Win98. (The version of Msvcrt.dll is 6.10.xxx)

Any ideas on fixes?

Thanks!
Bruce

Make sure you have the correct version of msvcrt.dll, ver 6.10.xxx does not
help us.

Meanwhile rule out parasites.

Try this: Tools > Internet Options > Advanced > Browsing
Uncheck the Enable 3rd party browser extensions

If this clears your problem then find out who the culprit(s) is/are with
these tools.

Let AD-Aware Scan your system for advertising Spyware
http://www.lavasoftusa.com

If you use a HOSTS file, beware of this new issue.
Ad-Aware has decided to include a new detection when scanning the HOSTS
file. This now creates a "Bad hosts file entry" in the log file generated at
the end of a scan. The best thing to do is to place a check in each entry,
right-click and select: "Add selection to ignorelist". Otherwise if you let
AWW "fix" these items it will trash the HOSTS file! Even if you have it
"locked" by [example] SpywareBlaster or Winpatrol. It does not return the
attributes and renames the HOSTS file incorrectly to hosts.

and:

SpyBot-S&D

p.s Reset the 3rd party browser setting.

More: This may be caused by a third-party program (adware, spyware,
parasite).

Here is what seems to have worked for me! I offer it as a non guaranteed
solution. If there are problems with it would the experts please let me
know.

I used System File Checker to extract a new msvcrt.dll. From memory it came
from cab 55 or thereabouts. Then when I went back onto the internet Zapro
identified that IE6 was trying to update msvcrt.dll presumably to the latest
version. This I permitted and my problem seems to have been solved.

At the same time i had a problem with outlook express not starting because
MSOE.DLL could not be loaded. I don't know whether it is linked. I solved
that problem by uninstalling OE6. This automatically put me back to OE5
which is working ok so far. I now have the option to upgrade again to OE6
via windows update.

Hope this helps for some people.
