IE 6 crash on load

I've found a few people complaining of the same problem:
I had been browsing the net with IE 6 (all updated
service packs were installed), and got a spam of popups,
which crashed IE. I tried to reopen IE and it immediately
crashes with an 'encountered a problem and needs to
close' response. I've tried uninstall/reinstall, updating
WinXP (Home) and everything else I can think of short of
reformatting to no avail. MSN Explorer works just fine,
so I know my connection is good, and I can open up a
static IE page (saved from months past) and it WILL open,
but if I try to browse from it, it crashes again. Any
help would be greatly appreciated

There's a good possibility that this is being caused by a third-party
program (adware, spyware, parasite).
