I no longer can do searches from the address bar, yes I
know about spyware, and ran Lavasoft's Ad-aware program,
and SpyBot program for removal of spyware. I let Ad-
aware remove what it found, and SpyBot found nothing to
remove/fix. I have also checked the search settings and
have the results sets to display in the main window, but
still no go. I have tried using different restore points
all the way back to January 1st when I know I didnt have
this problem and still the problem persists. I even
tried downloading IE 6 sp1 so that maybe a reinstall of
IE would fix the problem, and it downloads all the
components needed, but when it got to actually installing
it would not go past 87%; a window would pop-up saying
that the program was not logo tested by Microsoft and
therefore the program would not install. After trying
this numerous times, and I mean numerous, I finally
deleted all the files in the windows update setup files
folder.
I am at my wits end on what to do next!!!

Did you update Ad-Aware and SpyBot S & D before running them?

There are other things to try.
See
Dealing with Unwanted Spyware, Parasites, Toolbars and Search Engines
http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/unwanted.htm

Note that AdAware and SpyBot S & D will each catch some things the other
won't. Also, each need to be updated before every use, even when just
downloaded. There's also a lot more to do than just those two programs.

If trying everything at that site does not fix the problem please post back
in the same thread.

If you are getting a http:///??%searchterm error, this
can help.

Regedit:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\InternetExplorer\URLS
earchHooks

you should have 2 listings
{default} and
{CFBFAE00-17A6-11D0-99CB-00C04FD64497}

There was an underscore in front of the second entry.
Rename and there you go!
