At one time, I had my computer set up, where it did NOT open a new web page
every time I clicked on a new site (link). Now, all of a sudden, every time
I click on a new link, it opens a totally new, and separate web page. I'll
give an example, in Yahoo, I click on someones profile, it opens up a web
page showing me that persons profile. If I click on another persons profile,
it opens up another brand new web page! In the past, it just opened up the
"new" profile within the "same" webpage. Only one window / webpage open
then. I've tried all I know how. I'm constantly having to close web pages
this way. Does anyone have the fix here? I appreciate the help.

Thanks, Jessica

Jan,

Thanks very much for your help. Unfortunately, I still have the same issue.
I just can't figure out what happened to cause this. Its SUCH a pain to
constantly shut windows over and over and over.

Anyway, I ran your regsvr32 and rebooted. That did not work.
I redownloaded SP1 and rebooted. That did not work.
I loaded the NETframe 1.1 and rebooted. That did not work.

I'm totally confused as to why each link I click on opens in a different
window. It never used to do this until about 2 days ago and I honestly don't
remember downloading anything to have changed it.

Any more thoughts? I sincerely appreciate your, and anyone elses, help.

Thanks, Jessica

Hi JGlacier :-)

Please post the version of Windows you are using. Often this can be a very
important factor in what is causing the problem, and possible resolution.

Hi JGlacier :-)

You may have a hijacker, malware, spyware or parasites on your system
causing this problem. In addition to running your updated anti-virus
program, you should do the following to be sure none of these are present on
your system. Some variants of malware can replicate themselves over and
over if not removed properly. Please follow all instructions carefully to
be sure your system is thoroughly cleaned:

Dealing with Unwanted Spyware and Parasites:

Be sure to run CWShredder, Ad-aware and Spybot.
Also be sure to use the HijackThis. Please do not post your log to this
newsgroup, but to the SpywareInfo or the Aumha HiJackThis forums
http://forum.aumha.org/viewforum.php?f=30, to allow the experts there to
evaluate your log and advise you of the necessary steps to clean your
system.

CAUTION!!!!! Before you try to remove spyware using any of the programs
below, download a copy of LSPFIX from any of the following sites:

(if your OS is Win2k or XP) The process of removing certain malware may kill
your internet connection. If this should occur, this program, LSPFIX, will
enable you to regain your connection.

Hi JGlacier -)
Jan,

I have Windows 5.1 Build 2600 SP1

Thank you :-)

Try the following and see if this helps:

A New Window Appears When You Visit Some Web Sites

Courtesy of LuckyStrike -

When you visit some Web sites, a new Internet Explorer window (or in
some cases, multiple new windows) may open. These windows often contain
advertisements.
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=308446

One thing to do if you haven't yet done so is to disable Windows
Messenger Service, as some sites use that to bombard you with these
pop=up windows. Since You didn't say which OS you're using, see here:

W2k, NT, XP, home, XP pro
http://www.itc.virginia.edu/desktop/docs/messagepopup/

For W98 and ME:
Control Panel>Add/Remove programs>windows set-up tab>system
tools>details>un-check WinPopup>OK>apply>OK out. Re-boot if necessary.

Also, if you enable Active Scripting in the Internet Security Zone
custom configurations, you are opening a door for pop ups regardless if
you have a pop-up blocker. Advice: Disable (or at least set to prompt
that feature) Same for Active X (for other reasons).

How to surf the Internet more safely with Internet Explorer

Can only use one window in IE

Courtesy of Don Varnau -

You may have a program running which is blocking pop-up windows-
something like Yahoo Companion, Google toolbar, MSN toolbar, a firewall,
Earthlink (or another pop-up blocker) My IE2 (a shell for IE) etc.

The Yahoo Companion toolbar can cause this. You should be able to remove the
toolbar, but continue to use Yahoo Messenger, if you wish. For more
information see here:
http://help.yahoo.com/help/companion/

You'll have to turn off the feature that's blocking new windows or, perhaps,
uninstall the program

or..........

New & multiple windows opening all the time

Check the Advanced tab option Reuse windows for launching shortcuts

or.............

Try restoring all defaults Run...

regsvr32 /i shdocvw.dll

If these steps do not resolve your problem, please post back to this thread
with the details and any error messages.

Hope this helps

To all that have helped me I want to say "thanks"!!!

I have good news and bad news though. :-)

First off, many of the recommendations on here have led me to discover some
issues with spyware and adware on my computer. I now have all that cleaned
up and have protective software in place to help with that.

Believe it or not, and I am embarrassed to say this, I FINALLY discovered
what the problem was with opening too many IE windows. In my original
example I mentioned what was occurring in Yahoo with the profiles, each,
opening a new window. Well, it turns out that there is a setting in Yahoo
that controls this. There is an option that was checked which called for a
new window to open each time a new link was clicked upon. Oh well, I learn
something new every day. I do apologize for not knowing this but hopefully
this might help someone else as well.

Again, I appreciate everyones help!!! You're a great group!

Thanks, Jessica
