Hi,

I'm running Windows XP Home on a Sony Vaio laptop.

Problem: I am unable to access web sites using Flash.

When I try to access a site that uses Flash, the site tells me that I
need flash installed and re-directs me to MM Flash page to install. When
I try to install Flash, nothing happens, and the same sequence of events
continues.

It's as if my laptop thinks that Flash is installed when it isn't, yet
web sites can confirm that Flash isn't installed.

Can anyone help? (Macromedia can't or won't). This problem's been
driving me mad for months....

Sorry for cross-posting this mesage, but I'm desparate for any help I
can get....

Thanks,

Martin

Are you using a firewall? If so just disable it until you have installed the
program than turn it back on.

I have a router to which my desktop PC is connected by cable and my
laptop conected by wireless card - Norton Internet Security (software
firewall is disabled)

Really isn't installed or just not a high enough version to show their stuff?

Use Internet Properties View Objects... tool (in Settings...)
to see if you have an item called Shockwave Flash Object.

If it's there you could right-click Remove it and try again.
Would you have any security programs running which could interfere
with either that removal or that update? If so temporarily disable them.

Also it might be a better idea to go directly to Macromedia's site
instead of relying on redirects. If you have the latest version the
web applications shouldn't complain.

Good luck

Thanks for the help, Robert.....

I have been to MM site for their latest and it makes no difference....
still the same problem.

I've been to Internet Options>Settings and hit the View Objects
button.... and, nothing.

I've referred the problem to MM and all I got was a complicated
automated response which didn't help at all....

Any other thoughts?

Regards,

Martin

That sounds like a bigger problem than what you have been describing.
What should have happened is that an Explorer window open up
and show you %SystemRoot%\Downloaded Program Files

Is this your computer? It's possible I suppose that someone has
disabled all ActiveX on it. One thing which would certainly be there
otherwise is the Windows Update control. Have you visited WU?
E.g. with an IE window press Alt-T,U Going there should cause
your system to be scanned and the WU control installed if necessary.

Use the troubleshooter if you have trouble getting that done.

Note that you need to be logged on as an administrator in order to do
some updates but I think that you can do this much as a normal user
(unless there have been other restrictions applied to your system).

Hmm... here's an MSKB article about the controls.
It reminds me that you may want to make sure you can see hidden files.

<title>KB319585 - WINUP: "Software Update Incomplete, This Windows Update Software Did Not Update Successfully" Error Message When
You Visit the Windows Update Web Site</title>

I think that most of the instructions are also in the troubleshooter
but this may make them easier to read.

Good luck

Robert
