When I attempt to download a file from any site using Internet Explorer 6.0
the dialog box will momentarily appear to allow selection of a storage
location, then both the dialog box and browser window will close without
error or warning. I have attempted to resolve the problem by doing the
following with no success:

1. Removes all add-in's for IE 6.
2. Scanned for malicious software such as spyware and virus.
3. Uninstalled IE 6 and re installed.
4. Deleted all cookies, history and Temporary Internet files.
5. Deleted the index.dat file and rebooted system.
5. Almost tossed laptop, but I didn't.... :~)

The problem still exist and I have run out of ideas.... Any Suggestions?

Hi Robert, I have the same problem here as well, try temporarly disabling the
User Account Control I found this worked for me, obviously we need to get a
proper fix for this because you have to restart your computer to switch this
off/on, hope this helps you for now, Wanchip.

Sorry Robert, just noticed I'm in the wrong thread, I'm running IE7 with
Vista, sounds the same problem though??

Nass,

Thank you for getting back with me. I appreaiate your suggestion
but unfortunatly this is a step that I have already taken. I only wish it
were a case of not being notified of the download being completed. The
issue exist on uploading as well. Yesterday, I attempted to store a file on
a clients server using the browsing function of the web site. I selected
the browse button from the site to navigate to the file I wanted to upload
and the same issue occured. The dialod box closed on it's own and so did
IE.

Thanks again!
Bob

go through these cleaning steps to see or get a clear opinion on how
clean your machine is:
= Click Start >> Control Panel>>Network and Internet Connections >> Double
click Internet Options.
On the IE properties windows you will see these Tabs:
General | Security | Privacy | Content | Connections | Programs |
Advanced.
Under General Tab clear your History, Internet Files and Cookies.
Then click on Advanced tab and scroll down to under the Browsing Option:
[&] Browsing
[ ] Enable Third-Party browser extensions (Req Rest) uncheck this box.
[ ] Disable script Debugging (internet Explorer) <= check this box
[ ] Disable Script Debugging (Other) <= check this box
[&] HTTP 1.1 Settings
[ ] Use HTTP 1.1 ,= Make sure this checked
[ ] Use HTTP 1.1 through proxy connections
If you using proxy check the proxy one if not check only the first one.

Then click on Programs Tab and click Manage Add-Ons and Disable all non
Verified Add-Ons (You should Renable them later one-by-one and see the
culprit and update it or remove it.
Also you can click on the Reset web settings Button there
How to manage Add-Ons:

2.... And also for malware from here:

http://onecare.live.com/standard/en-gb/default.htm
http://www.lavasoft.com/products/ad-aware_se_personal.php
http://www.safer-networking.org ; for Spybot S&D

Run a scan from here on-line:
http://www.sophos.com
http://www3.ca.com/securityadvisor/virusinfo/scan.aspx
http://security.symantec.com/sscv6/default.asp?productid=symhome&langid=ie&venid=sym
Download Avast Cleaner from here:
http://www.avast.com/eng/avast-virus-cleaner.html
Lots of tools to download and disinfect your machine:
http://www.bitdefender.co.uk/site/Downloads/browseFreeRemovalTool/
http://free.grisoft.com/doc/5390/lng/us/tpl/v5

Again on the Run command type in:
ipconfig /flushdns click [OK]
ipconfig /renew click [OK]
netsh winsock reset click [OK]
Reboot your machine and see if you can access any website/link easily and
without the cannot connect error message.

Or try this winsock fixer from here (although the netsh command should
correct the winsock but not always) :
http://www.nasstec.co.uk/tools.html

After doing these steps I will check some Registry Keys with you and see
what gone wrong!.
