IE 6.0 shuts down

I'm having issues with IE 6.0 shutting down when I do anything. It happens
randomly, but usually when I hit the Back button, sometimes when I click a
link (i.e. within a story), and even when I click a Favorite link. This
started late last week, and is happening more frequently.

I'm running Windows 2000 on a PC. Haven't installed anything new on the
computer that I can think of. Ran Norton, Ad-Aware and Spybot. Tried to run
MS antispyware, but it wouldn't run without an upgrade (to Windows Defender)
so I did. It didn't help.

I re-installed IE 6.0, and installed all the updates again. Twice, just to
be certain. I'm not a good computer technician, but I'd like to try to fix
myself if possible. Any suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated!

I am having same problem. My problem with this forum is there seems to be no
answers to this problem. Can someone help?

Hi,
Open IE properites window and Clear your caches and delete Internet Offline
files and Cookies.
Click on advanced Tab and uncheck the Option Under Browsing;
[ ] Enable Third Party Browser extension. uncheck.

On the Programs Tab clcik on Reset Web settings Button, while there if you
have other than MS IE toolbar Disable all the Plug-Ins for them by clicking
on Manage Add-Ons and there Disable all Non-Ms Plug-Ins.
Click Ok to confirm your Changes.
Open a Run Command and type the following in the Text Input Box;
netsh winsock reset click OK.

Reboot and see if your issue been resolved.
If no joy still, Look for any Error messages, you may have Defective
Software or Damaged Files contrbuting to this Behavior to occur in IE
browsing.
Also Overheated System or Bad Memory Sticks, or Anti-Virus can slow down or
Block the connection.
How do you connect to the Internet with Broadband or what?
HTH.

Hi,
You have a problem with Windows Defender for somehow you can't get the
Update definintions for the engine
First try this;
Open the IE and Click on Tools >> Internet Options >> Click On Connections
Tab, then click on LAN settings
Button.
On the LAN Settings window check "Automatically Detect Settings" check box
and Click OK.
Reboot your Machine and try to connect.

=If you Run Firewall client check this Option feature in the ISA Firewall
Client;
In the Control Panel Double Click on the Firewall Client or Right Click the
Icon on the notification Area
=Click on Configure and Select Automatically Detect ISA Server Check Boc.
=Then clcik Update Now and click Ok to Confirm your changes.
Reboot and see if the problem will go away.
If still having trouble Uninstall Windows Defender and reinstall it again.

None of the above fixes the problem (IE 6 on Win2000 Pro) and only
succeeds in losing all of your cookie-enabled auto-logins and you also
lose any toolbars you have installed. Don't do it, it doesn't fix the
problem..

My issue is exactly the same and started overnight Wednesday into
Thursday. That's when I get automatic updates from MS. I think it
likely that they have screwed up something with the update given the #
of people who seem to suddenly be suffering from the same thing all at
once. Their website help page takes you to the article associated with
this problem as the #1 accessed page but they offer no solution for
anyone running Win2000.It seems based on that as if many people are
experiencing the same thing.

MS needs to find a fix for this fast! As it is, I was forced to install
Firefox in order to have any kind of web browser capability.

KP, I couldn't agree more. My issues coincided with your own and I to am
convinced that this is down to some update error. I have now moved to Firefox
and will monitor IE to see if there's an update. But IE 6 is looking rather
dated now and I think it may be time to move on.

OK, looks like I fixed it. I had to go to MS and download IE 6 and SP1
all over again and reinstall them. I had to override the warning during
the install that the software was already installed and that I should
exit. Reinstall them both anyway.

So far it is back to its old self again. Something definitely got
screwed up with the Wednesday night update.

K I had this same gd problem as well starting thursday and Ive downloaded and
updated and reinstalled til the cows came home and my problem isn't fixed.

Actually I didn't redownlaod IE 6 because I never could find a link???? It
just always directed me to SP1. Does anyone know where I can download IE 6
again?

Hi KP. Thank you. I have done this and it seems to be working. What if it
tells us now that we need sp2??? should we just ignore that?

Actually it screwed itself up again overnight because I forgot to turn
off the automatic updates from MS. This AM I had to uninstall IE, d/l
SP1 again, then reinstall. This time I had turned off the automatic
updates and as soon as the reinstall finished it told me I had updates
available. I looked at the list and it seems the one that causes the
problem is a cumulative security update dated August 8th. I checked
that not to install, let all the others go ahead (they were quite old)
and so far all is well.

Hi! Sorry for the delay. I've been reading the threads, and here are my
replies:

To Nass (from 8/18)
1) We're running on a cable modem - I just know it's not dial-up.
2) I've cleared the caches, and deleted offline files, cookies and history.
I try to do this regularly to avoid situations like the one I'm in. Of course!
3) I'll have to get out of my other programs first, but will try resetting
web settings, disabling plug-ins, etc.
4) Apparently there is an error log, but I can't seem to find it.

To Nass (in response to Phyne & Moonwitch2006)
I, too, run the Yahoo! toolbar, and have for years with no troubles. I'll
add this to my laundry list.

I'm okay with losing all of my cookie-enabled auto-logins and the Yahoo!
toolbar ... if it fixes the problem. I've downloaded IE6 and SP1 several
times (on 8/18), overriding the warnings. I've downloaded IE6 and not SP1
just to see what would happen - same thing. I'll try all of the above. Is
there anything I should be aware of?

Thank you!

Yes, I came back to say I spoke too soon, too. Let me know if that works
and then I will do the same thing. You sould think that microsoft would
catch on and fix the problem itself. What about going to add/remove and
doing "repair"? Does that feature still work? I have win 2000. Thanks for
your help. And, good luck.

Yes. Your OS has setupwbv.dll so you can use its IE Repair feature.
(ref. KB194177)

Hint: if you don't see IE listed in your Add/Remove Programs
you should still be able to Run... (e.g. press Win-R) and enter:

rundll32 setupwbv.dll,IE6Maintenance

(Note: entrypoint name is case sensitive.)

FYI all that does essentially is a whole bunch of regsvr32 commands
for key IE modules under controlled conditions (e.g. during its forced boot.)
It does some minimal version checking before requesting the boot but doesn't
actually replace modules. You would need sfc /scannow to do that.

However, I don't think that either repair procedure will help in your case.
E.g. I suspect your symptom is the one described here:

<title>Internet Explorer 6 Service Pack 1 unexpectedly exits after you install the 918899 update</title>
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/923762/

Probably the net effect of the other poster's suggestion would be
to uninstall the problem update. The suggestion in the above article
is to leave the problem update installed and either make do with the
workaround until a superseding update is available or request the hotfix.
Supposedly, provided you explicitly state that the only thing you want
is the hotfix you won't get charged for the support call.

Thanks for
your help. And, good luck.

Ditto. ; )

Okay. I went to the page and did the "work around thing" Went into tools,
internet options, advanced and unchecked the box Use http 1.1. They said to
do that and then wait for the update to fix the problem with 918899. I'll
let you know if that helps for now, and what it does to pc.

Thanks again for your help.

I just got a critical update notice for IE SP4. I let it go through
installing nd it came back and said it was "unsuccessful"...hmm what does
that mean. I went in to check the "use http1.1. again to see if that would
work and it was already checked. Really confused now. Guess I should try
the repair feature. Any suggestions?
