Lately I've been having problems with the IE 6.0 browser (build
6.00.2800.1123). After opening a few web pages, I end up with the error
message 'Cannot find server - Microsoft Internet Explorer ... The page
cannot be displayed' . I've clicked on Detect Network Setting, and also the
Refresh button, but to no avail. I've downloaded the latest updates for Win
98SE from the MS site (for which support was provided up until July 11,
2006).
Even after rebooting, this message will appear again after loading just a
few pages.

This is driving me nuts ... can anyone help ?

Thanks in advance, Brad

Hi,
How do you connect to the internet (i.e DSL, ADSL, Router, ISDN), if DSL you
need to uninstall the Modem Driver and install it again.
TRy first delete the Temp files and clear you caches then Reboot and see if
that help.
If no joy reinstall the Modem Software/Driver.
HTH.
Please write back with your findings.
Regards,
nass

Well you may want to check your computer for viruses and adware and spyware
then if you have a clean system that would narrow your troubleshooting down a
bit. Let me know if this is helpful.

Try typing "IE6 cannot find server" into Google and go from there.

I noticed when checking My Computer --> System Properties --> Device
Manager --> Modem that I had two modems setup up (reason unknown). I'm
running an external Motorola 56K ModemSurfr. I've removed the second and
gave the browser a workout by opening up a number of web pages one after
another. I got a few pages further before it crapped out. I checked the
driver issue, only to discover that I am using the best available driver for
the modem. A google search suggested by someone97 seems to indicate the
possibility of a virus as the culprit. I'll look at this area tomorrow.
Thanks to all for their suggestions.

Brad,

This could be caused by any number of things. Have you run Internet
EXplorer Repair Tool?, emptied Temporary Internet Files folder,
including cookies and off-line content? Are you blocking Mobile code,
Java, etc, in your Firewall? Also, sometimes re-registering .dll's
works. See below.

: Subject: Run commands - Register dlls, IE

One or more of the following files is missing, damaged, or
improperly registered: .
Urlmon.dll
Mshtml.dll
Actxprxy.dll
Oleaut32.dll
Shell32.dll
Shdocvw.dll
:
:
: RESOLUTION
: To resolve this problem in Internet Explorer, follow these steps: 1.
: Quit all programs that are running.
: 2. Click Start, and then click Run.
: 3. Type regsvr32 urlmon.dll, and then click OK.
: 4. When you receive the "DllRegisterServer in urlmon.dll succeeded"
: message, click OK.
: If this does not resolve the problem, repeat steps 2 through 4 for
: each of the following files (in step 3, replace Urlmon.dll with each
: of the file names below)
Shdocvw.dll
Msjava.dll
Actxprxy.dll
Oleaut32.dll
Mshtml.dll
Browseui.dll
Shell32.dll (Windows XP and Windows 2000 only)

Hope one of these helps. Re-registering the .dlls worked for me a
couple of weeks ago.

Hi Charlie

Re-registering the .dlls looked good for a short period, as pages loaded.
However, I'm back in the same old rut again. Can you explain what you mean
by running the 'Internet Explorer Repair Tool' ? I've left my firewall (Zone
Alarm) off during this episode as I try to get IE up and running. I'm hoping
to get Firefox downloaded as soon as my IE browser gets me that far.

Thanks for your help Charlie, Brad

Hi Brad,

To run IE Repair Tool: Click Start, Programs, Accessories, System
Tools, System Information. On the Menu Bar, Tick Tools. Internet
Explorer Repair Tool should be there. You can also find it in Control
Panel, Add/Remove Programs. Click Internet Explorer 6 SP1 and click
Add/Remove. You'll see a box with three choices. Tick Repair Internet
Explorer, OK. Close all other programs before doing this. You'll have
to reboot to complete the repair.

Hope that's clear enough. Good luck.

If your problems are being cause by hijackware (very likely), reinstalling
or repairing IE won't help. This stuff infects Windows, not the browser.

When all else fails, HijackThis v1.99.1
(http://aumha.org/downloads/hijackthis.zip) is the preferred tool to use.
It will help you to both identify and remove any hijackware/spyware. **Post

forums for expert analysis, not here.**

If the procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting this
isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a local, reputable and
independent (i.e., not BigBoxStoreUSA) computer repair shop.

Thanks again Charlie. I did figure it out as I went to remove IE 6, and did
the repair instead. Your email confirms that I did the correct procedure.
I'm still S.O.L. however,as I'm now unable to load a single web page. What's
even worse, I'm unable to complete a file download for Firefox from
Mozilla.com, as it crashes less than 1/4 of the way through (see attached
jpg screen shot). I'm about ready to toss this thing .. thanks for all your
help though.

Hi Brad,

I'm not clear on your meaning. Do you mean that the site isn't working
at all, or what? I googled for it, and had no problems.

Brad,

IFF you mean: http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp
I was just there and here is the URL that I copied from the site.

IFF you DID NOT mean this, then please excuse the interruption.

Go to "Control Panel", "Internet Options", click on the Security tab,
highlight "Trusted sites", click "Sites" and add "*.microsoft.com" to
the list. Then try Windows Update again.

Thanks once again to all for the advice. I'm sure when I reinstalled Win98
SE back in July I had no difficulty getting SP1 even without IE6 running,
though I could be wrong.

Thanks to all, Brad

Well, assuming you're posting here from the machine in question, your posts'
headers (5.00.2615.200 => IE/OE 5.0, native to Win98SE) tell me that IE6 SP1
is not installed yet.

Brad,

If you have the Windows Security CD, February 2004, it has IE6 SP1 on
it.
