IE 6.0 hangs computer for several minutes

When starting IE 6.0, the dial-up connects successfully to
the net, but Internet explorer either doesn't open
immediately, or it starts to open my home page and hangs.
If I try to open other programs, like MS Word, Task
Manager, or even Solitaire, nothing happens. I can
explore the hard drive and view files, but none of the
programs open.

After 3-7 minutes, all of the programs open at the same
time and I can continue on the net as though nothing has
happened.

I've run Norton Antivirus with updated virus definitions,
uninstalled IE 6.0 and resinstalled, with no success. I
replaced the modem, memory, and network card, also with no
success.

Any ideas?

I suggest you get a new computer with High Speed access.
