Hello:
I have a HP Pavilion which came pre-installed with Win XP
Home SP1. I don't know what can of Auto-Update it has
been doing but my IE 6.0 brower is from hell! It keeps
generating Script Errors on some website and regardless
of whatever I do, the errors won't go away. It does not
diplay some pages properly while another Dell computer
with Win XP home SP1 works fine. The information for IE
(Help --> About) show similar info:

6.0.2800.1105.xpsp2.030422-1633
Update Versions;:SP1;Q330994;Q828750
However, in case of the bad HP computer, there is a
Product ID: 55736-XX.... While the good Dell has "OEM" in
Product ID.

No matter what I do, I am stuck. I downloaded Microsoft's
IE 6.0 SP1 but it did not install saying that a Newer
Version of IE is already installed. I would just be happy
to install IE 5.5 but obviously that is not possible
either. I am stuck! Here are some of the websites where I
keep running into errors:

www.greenvillenews.com (shows repeated Script Errors)
www.alphaobjects.com (does not show a Virtual Tour button
on the bottom of the screen)

This is just a frustrating situation. Please help. I
think I need a clean break from the current version of
the IE install and need to install something similar to
the one that is installed on the Dell or something from
the MS website.

Thanks.

p.s. I even "Uninstalled" the IE from this computer but
it never really Uninstalls either! Just hides.

From http://www.fjsmjs.com/IE/scriptdb.htm

Go to Tools | Internet Options | Advanced.
Check the box to Disable script debugging.
Uncheck the box to Display a notification about every script error.

You might want to refresh your scripting engine:

Hello:
Thank you for your response. Even though I had already
tried all these before (unchecking of Disable Script
Debugging, Show Every Error, the version 5.6 Scripting
Engine for IE in XP), I tried it again. But to no avail:
www.greenvillenews.com is still showing repeated Script
error even if I press on the "No" button for future
errors. That website is just an instance. There are other
problems with this browser which I don't see in other IE
installed in different machine (I am a developer).

One of my main problem is: The problem is happening on a
machine which is my primary development machine.

I think it is unfair to tie the whole OS to this browser
version. I cannot uninstall it completely, I cannot
upgrade because, as indicated in my previous email, the
IE 6 SP1 update from Microsoft's site thinks that I
already have the latest browser.

Any ideas?
Thank you.

Do you have a pop-up stopper or any Norton program?

Yes, I run Popup Manager but stopping that makes me no
difference. The same blocker works fine in other machines
running XP and 2000.
About Norton, I do have Norton AntiVirus 2003 running in
the background.

I will try to disable both NAV and the Popup Manager and
try again....

Thank you again for the help. I really think that version
of IE has multiple issues, as I indicated above. I would
be great to have a clean install from anyother IE 5.0+
browser.

Problem Solved! My HP computer came with a "Freedom"
software suite which provided FireWall and other security
related stuff. Uninstalling it solved the problem.
Thank you very much for your help.
