IE 6.0 - Browser Freezes - Any Ideas?

I can confirm that iexplore.exe crashes in module mshtml.dll when going
directly to that link. I downloaded the .html file and it opened okay - but
without the CSS. The second page of the article linked from that opened
okay as well - with CSS.
http://www.womenswallstreet.com/columns/column.aspx?aid=1087&p=2 Clicked
the link there to the first page and it crashed again, same way as before.
Sorry, can't help much, but someone better able to look at the difference in
the coding of those two pages will probably come along....

Same observation as Jon. This page started to load on my IE6 & actually displayed a fair amount of the page. But very shortly, IE crashed with the same issue as Jon mentioned.
Apparently, it abended at (or about) trying to download from another site (http://rcn.amazon.com/e/.......)

I don't think it's an issue with your system, but rather, something with the amount of ads they have or how they load them.

Same page loaded just fine in Netscape.

P.S. Looking at the page source for that page, it sure seems it's been corrupted.

Got curiouser. Accessing that page in Maxthon does not get it to crash. But the tab-window does freeze. What's even better is that the menu & toolbars in Maxthon continue to work & are responsive.

What do you mean by "corrupted". Can anyone else shed some light on
this? Thanks for the replies.

Hello,

I had a similar problem accessing the main page of Download.com
several weeks ago. Links to other pages would load okay, but main
page would freeze, and Internet Explorer would "encounter a problem,
and have to close, want to send info to Microsoft." The problem was
always with Mshtml.dll , and several others. I finally resolved the
problem by running the Internet Exp. Repair Tool in Safe Mode.
Running in normal mode would not fix it. The problem started after
installing some security patches from Microsoft. Mshtml.dll must have
gotten corrupted. Win98 with IE6SP1 and updates.

Yeah but it seems that this is happening across the board on all IE 6.0
Windows machines, not just mine. I don't think I can tell users to
repair that DLL you know?

thanks!

Hello "rh",

By corrupted, I mean that (at least to me) the coding for that webpage has a huge line of garbage.

I just went to that page you cited
http://www.womenswallstreet.com/columns/column.aspx?aid=1087&p=1

while it did load the page & I can see the first & next page, my IE browser died again. Same error.

My sense is that this page should be avoided.

Questions for you: Is your browser doing ok on other websites? Are there other places (outside womenswallstreet.com) where you have the same issue?

If only problem is on this site, my sense is that you need not be thinking about any changes on your system.
At most, contact the webmaster for that site & advise them of the issue.

FYI: I'm running XP-pro-SP2 & IE6-SP2

Please don't do any repairs.

I've emailed to the website's tech support & briefly described the problem. Let's see how soon they reply.

Some observations: The page is testing whether the user has Windows & Internet Explorer. One issue. And if so, stores some unique values. One that I noted (something-or-other VIEWSTATE ) gets set with a super-huge number of random characters. All of this has nothing to do with the actual content of the article itself !!! That super-huge value looks like "a" piece of garbage, at least to me.

Summary again: Viewing that article in 2 versions of Netscape runs fine. (plus source looks different than what you get in I.E.)
Viewing the page in Maxthon browser gets a freeze on only that tab-window.
Viewing the page in Internet Explorer will eventually lead to your IE "crashing".

It's not your system that's the problem. The problem lies with the way the "webmaster" or "author" has coded that page.

This just in. I got a reply from the site's Admin. Here's the note.

Hi Maurice. Yes we've noticed that problem with a few Ask Jane Dough
articles in Internet Explorer
And we are troubleshooting it as we speak.

Thank you for your concern and we hope to resolve this type of problem
immediately.

i've been having this problem for weeks now and i have tried everything to
fix it (virus scans, spyware scans, discussions with my brother the computer
engineer, the tech guys at work, etc.). i've been pulling my hair out! the
tech guy at work said to run the beta saftety.live.com, but whatever this
bug is, it won't even let me install that!

yes, i also use Firefox and encounter none of these problems, but certain
things (such as Westlaw - i'm a law student) are optimized for IE only, so
it would really be helpful to figure this out.

the problem is not limited to certain sites. it seems to be related to links
that launch some sort of active script - either javascript or activeX. click
on such a link, regardless of the web site, and IE freezes. usually it
doesn't give an error message - i have to close through the task manager b/c
IE doesn't respond, which then makes the error message about a "hungapp".

any other ideas?

Hi davina :-)

Unless you are accessing the same page as the OP in this thread, you may
have a different problem. Also, as of Maurice's last reply to the OP, the
problem is a known issue on the webpage acknowledged by the webmaster of the
site, and there is nothing the OP needs to do to rectify the problem.

If you are have a similar problem, then please post a new thread here, fully
explain the details of your particular problem, what version of Windows you
are using, and the exact wording of any error messages, and we will do our
best to help you find a solution to your problem. :-)

Thank you!

Jan :)

Consider this situation closed. I'm taking the liberty of quoting the website Admin.

FYI Maurice. We were able to isolate the problem and fix it.
For some reason in one of our CSS files, there was a DIV styled with the
Vertical-align property. Taking that out fixed the problem.

Thanks for your concern.

I am still having the browser freezes. I downloaded Netscape just to see if
it happens there. Guess what - NO FREEZES EVER!!! \
Are you saying that Microsoft says they fixed the problem. Anybody have any
hints as to what could be happening. If I have to see that "do you want to
send information to Microsft" window again I think I will scream!! LOL

I have been having this problem for a couple of months and just don't know
where to start with trying to fix it. I have downloaded all the "updates"
etc.

Help?????
