IE 6.0 and Outlook recurring problem - "Needs to close"

I'm out of options. I'm running Win XP Pro sp2. For about the last month,
when I open either IE 6 or Outlook, I get a message box that says a problem
has been encountered and needs to close. When I view the technical info
provided, the file "wininet.dll" is always identified. If I slide the box
down and ignore it, I'm able to stay online, except when I log onto eBay at
which time IE6 closes. I've installed all available MS updates for Windows,
IE6, and Office 2000. I use Norton Internet Security and MS Spyware and I'm
very careful about keeping things updated. I've read other threads in this
section and have followed advice about rerunning spyware in safe mode as well
as running several registry correction programs recommended. The last thing I
did was purchase and run PC Tools registry repair program which identified
and repaired over 400 problems. I still get the message. If I rerun the
registry repair program after closing IE6, it identifies and repairs 4 new
problems which are always the same. I don't understand what they mean but
they mention cache1, cache2, cache3, and cache4. Sorry about the long thread,
but maybe somebody can help. Thanks.

Hi J. Johnson :-)

Wininet.dll errors are most usually caused by a corrupt cache.

The Cache

The temporary I.E. files folder is a cache for web pages that you have
visited. I don't know why Microsoft sets the default so high, but I have
seen 2gb set for storage. This and other setting can be changed to decreace
the size of the storage area, and supposedly delete the I.E. temp file when
you close the browser.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the reply. You fixed the problem!! I ran "CCleaner" that was
mentioned in one of the sites that you suggested. It cleared the cache, the
temp files, and several other things. Thanks again!
