Hi there,

I've got some severe problems with downloading files and getting any Windows
Updates, when ever I'm trying to download I'm getting the "IE cannot download
[file] from [server]" message.

I had a friend send me through the hotfix on Microsoft through MSN (because
strangely files will transfer across on that) however, when I try to run it,
it says you need IE 6 SP1, I've now got a copy of IE 6 SP1, tried to install
that and its telling me I have a newer version installed(?!?).

When trying to go to the update centre its trying to validate my Windows as
genuine software, however, can't get anywhere because ActiveX won't download.

I'm now at tethers end, tried virus scanning, using AdAware, Microsoft
SpyWare remover - and nothings working!! Security settings seem to be fine.

Anyone got any ideas?!? Please!!

Craig

Craig,

Are you getting a "stack overflow" error box? If so, you have the same IE6
bug I have.

I think they have some issues with handling javascript in the latest update
and it causes similar malfunctions.

I downloaded and installed Firefox, just to see if the problem was on the
websites I was visiting ... no problems with firefox, but you can't get the
MS updates with it.

If I find a fix, I'll post it. ................ Jim

Hi Craig :-)

Do you have anything Yahoo installed? If so, Go to Control Panel>Add/REmove
programs and remove everything Yahoo. If you have Google toolbar
installed, disable it. Then try again.

also....this may sound a bit off the wall...but, have you checked the

I 'm still experiencing problems downloading anything from IE6 but problems
with getting past the windows validation has now been rectified. The
following e-mail is from Compass Rule Manager (Microsft).

Dear Cynthia,

Thank you for getting back to me.

I understand that you received the error code -2146827850. This issue can
occur if ActiveX controls subkeys are missing from the registry. At this
time, let's refer to the following steps to resolve this issue.

1. Click Start, Click Run, type in "notepad C:\fix.reg" (without quotation
marks) and press Enter. Choose Yes when you are prompted.
2. Copy the following commands and then paste them into the opened Notepad
window.

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{0000031A-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}]
@="ClassMoniker"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{0000031A-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}\InprocServer32]
@="ole32.dll"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{0000031A-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}\ProgID]
@="clsid"

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\CLSID]
@="{0000031A-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}"

3. After you paste the above commands, please close the Notepad window.
Choose Yes when you are prompted to save the file.
4. Click Start and Click Run, type in "C:\fix.reg" (without quotation marks)
and press Enter to run the commands we have pasted.

5. A dialog box will pop-up saying "Are you sure you want to add the
information in C:\fix.reg to the registry?". Click Yes on this dialog box
6. Reboot the machine.
7. After the machine reboots use Windows Update and see if the problem has
gone away.

Hope this helps. I think there is the possibility of defective or
malfunctioning registry keys affecting the download problems. I'm still
working on my problem which is noted on page 86 on this day, titled "can't
download software from IE6". There might be some help for you there.
