Hi. I am hoping someone can help. I am running windows 98 second edition on
my laptop 650 GHZ P3 with 256kRAM and 10GB HDD. Whenever I browse with IE, at
some stage it will just not be able to load the page and it goes on and on
and on. THen if I close the window, it stays on my bottom toolbar for a few
minutes then prompts me to end the task.
THis happens so regularly that it has taken me 8 attempts to get to writing
this post!! I am hoping there is an easy fix so please help me before I go to
the dark side!.

Cheers,

G

Other than considering Frank's suggestion, namely that you look again using
some other spyware remover, you might look at your security settings. Not
that you should lower them, but perhaps convert some of them to notify, so
that you can see if this is where things are hanging up. Lots of pages seem
very insistent on ActiveX. Make sure your cache has been emptied, if you
don't automatically dump it each session. But one thing puzzled me--if
you're using the CDO interface to post to the NGs, why don't you use OE,
instead? It's much easier and faster. The only problem is to make sure you
compact regularly and correctly.

I don't understand that last comment, unless you were interacting
with the web site somehow during the composing phase?

It sounds like a communications problem but that OS seems to be
totally devoid of diagnostic tools for discovering the nature of it.

When this happens can you use other Internet apps?
Can you use ping or tracert from a command window?

I think it would be useful to know details about your link too.

I'm crossposting this to a networking newsgroup for you OS
in case those more familiar with it wish to add their ideas.

Alternatively since you are posting through a web interface
to newsgroups and depending on the portal you are using (URL)
you could click on the second newsgroup name
which will appear in the header of my message
in order to access that newsgroup.

Or just find my post for your thread in here:

I was meaning that IE became unresponsive at loading the next page about 8
times in a row before I got to this page. I wasn't using OE to access the
newsgroups. I was using Tbird.
When this happens can you use other Internet apps?

Yes, can still check emails

Sorry not too sure what you mean about my link?

I appreciate your help thank you Robert.

Oh, I see. "Get to" means "navigate to". For some reason I was
visualizing that the composing phase was being interrupted.

I'll echo your other responder then: why not post using a real newsreader,
instead of using a web interface? <eg>

In any case, it will also be useful to get more details on your symptoms.
E.g. what exactly do you mean by "IE became unresponsive"
and how long are you waiting to decide that? Is it only one IE window
or the whole task (e.g. in the case that you would have multiple IE windows
opened under one iexplore.exe task.)

Yes, can still check emails

Then the networking newsgroup may not be the right target
for a cross-post. Still I think it would be useful to get help
from someone who has more experience with diagnosing
problems in that OS so I'll leave it on.

Link means network interface, e.g. hardware, related software,
(firewall? proxy?), etc. Essentially a description of the path
that requests take to the remote servers and the responses
come back along.
