IE10 Platform Preview 1, available for download today is the first step in delivering the next wave of progress in native HTML5 support. Web sites and HTML5 run best when they run natively, on a browser optimized for the operating system on your device.
We built IE9 from the ground up for HTML5 and for Windows to deliver the most native HTML5 experience and the best Web experience on Windows. IE10 continues on IE9’s path, directly using what Windows provides and avoiding abstractions, layers, and libraries that slow down your site and your experience:

I thought this was a joke when I read the title... IE9 has only just come out

Thanks for posting this Evan, it will be interesting to see how IE10 shapes up.

MS didn't quite finish IE9 so they need to include the missing element web sockets, CSS3 Multi-column Layout, CSS3 Grid Layout, CSS3 Flexible Box Layout, CSS3 Gradients, and ES5 Strict Mode.

Still no spell checker ?

Microsoft is expected to preview Windows 8 this summer, with a beta expected in September. IE10 is expected to be Windows 8's default browser. :)

The fastest growing browser today is Google's Chrome. :thumb:

You don't have to believe me, but here are some facts you can't ignore.
Let me just list some of the stuff IE9 doesn't support:

  • Application Cache (offline)
  • Web Workers (threads in JavaScript)
  • HTML5 Forms (validation mechanism, CSS3 selectors)
  • JavaScript Strict Mode
  • ForeignObject (embed external content in SVG)
  • SMIL Animations (SVG animations)
  • File API
  • WebGL (3D)
  • CSS3 Transitions (for animations)
  • CSS3 Text Shadow
  • CSS3 Gradients
  • CSS3 Border Image
  • CSS3 Flex box model
  • ClassList APIs
  • FormData
  • HTML5 History API
  • Drag'n Drop from Desktop
  • ...
Let me list stuff that IE9 can do others don't:

  • text-overflow doesn't work in Firefox 4.
  • Calc is not supported in Chrome 9.
So that's why I don't consider IE9 a Modern Browser.

Abarb for your average user unless they had some sort of web developement behind them wouldn't have a scooby do what half the things are you listed.

"Is IE9 a modern browser?

Let's compare IE9 to Firefox 4
HTML5 test

IE9: 130
Firefox 4: 255
Firefox 3.5 (two years ago): 142

In 2011, IE9 now supports Canvas, Video, Geolocation and SVG. Firefox came with Canvas and SVG 5 years ago, Video and Geolocation 2 years ago."

I just looked at the link in your post and went to the bit "Your Browser" FF4 scored 259/400 and IE 9 scored 32/400. Still messing about with about:config in FF4 and it just gets better every time I play around :D

I "score" 290 +13 bonus points

maybe the next release of FF will catch up.

you do like flogging a dead horse barbera

Ech to their own, but Firefox with a few about:config's will nail any browser:D
Precisely why I use Chrome, so I don't have to "fix" it and ponce about ... KISS :)

I'd give chrome a go but can not be bothered with swapping bookmarks
oh yes, sorry, it is a bit tedious to import your bookmarks from any browser with one click, maybe they will auto-import one day.

FF sucks, get a real browser, use Navigator
