Idle state not detected

I have a brand new clean install of Vista 32. It does not detect the PC idle
state. That is, I can leave the mouse and keyboard untouched for minutes or
hours, and the screensaver never comes on, monitor never turns off, PC never
sleeps, etc. I have all these things set up to happen after various minutes
of delay in Power Options, but they don't. Any ideas?

Wireless USB mouse?

Wireless USB mouse?

It's interesting that the file indexing function (visible in Indexing
Options) detects idle state OK. That is, if I don't touch the kbd or mouse,
after a couple of minutes it switches into its fast-indexing mode. As soon
as I move the mouse it reverts to its "indexing speed is reduced due to user
activity" mode.

Anyway, yes, I have a Microsoft wireless USB mouse. I've read the other
posts on the Internet about this problem. It seems that the solution is a
recent MS update for 'HID non-user input data filter.' I don't recall
getting such an update, and there is no such optional update offered to me by
Windows update. I can't find a way to tell if it's already installed, either.

Another thing: This very same hardware (PC, kbd, mouse, everything) did not
have this problem with my previous Vista install. (I had to wipe it and
start over due to a different, unresolvable, issue with the Search function
-- now that issue is fixed but instead I have this one.) I do recall getting
the 'HID non-user input data filter' update for the previous Vista install.
And, the same hardware also worked fine with XP.

PROBLEM SOLVED
The 'HID non-user input data filter' update finally appeared in my Windows
Update. MS is apparently pushing out this one very gradually. I installed
it and my screensaver, etc. are now working.
