Idle Hard Disk Activity

How much if any activity is normal, with the system just "sitting" ?
What causes these momentary disk accesses ? What is the contribution
to long term wear 'n tear from this "idle" activity ?

The Indexing Service could be involved in that
activity. Every time you add something new to your
computer it searches through it for specific words
and catalogs them so that the search facility can
find items you are looking for quickly.

If you want to know which application causes disk activity
get a utility called file monitor from microsoft and it will
tell you.

Many thanks for responding, the reference, and your very apropos
comments ....

Disk optimization when system is idle (sort of defragmentation)! Thus
disk activity. I can't remember how to stop that service...

Very valuable post. No quotes, no description of system, hardware,
etc. This makes everything crystal clear.

In case you are as confused as you appear, the above is sarcasm.
