Ranish Partition Manager is OK, but I wouldn't necessarily call it
idiot-proof. You may find that the partitioning software that comes with
your distribution to be adequate.

DANGER WILL ROBINSON, DANGER

Back up your data before fiddling with partitions (but hey, you do that
anyway, right?! RIGHT?). You should really assume that the whole shebang
will get scrambled when you try fiddle with partitions.

It may be possible to find partition-resizing software, but you should
assume the worst.

Presuming that your drive has one big partition, you will need to split
it in two (probably three [one for the swap], but maybe more). So it's
a practical guarantee that you main partition will be zapped as a result
of the exercise. So the trick is to embrace the madness, rather than
avoid it.

What Linux distribution did you have in mind, anyway?

I'm brighter than an idiot, but not a lot.

Working linux (IME!) calls for a brain as big as all outdoors, flame-proof
undies when you ask a question, the ability to speak idiomatic klingon, and
endless determination.

If you need an idiot proof partitioner, think again.

The good news is that most CDs which come on magazine covers (mandrake,
fedora etc, come with idiot proof partitioners.

It's only after installation your troubles start ;0)

Of course, Real Men use BSD. Ah, set flamethrowers to maximum.

Seriously though, I've installed DragonFlyBSD and think it's mighty
fine. Think Debian package management meets Slackware installation
simplicity (with a few of the rough edges lopped off).

The popular freeware partitioning program is back! The first free
program to resize and move partitions without data loss, is now more
complete, with support for disks up to 2TB of size.

New features include:
=====================
Int13 extensions support allows handling of disks up to 2TB (2048GB) of
size. New Resizing/Moving engine with simpler inerface. Move and resize
your partitions in one step. Transparent extended partition resizing (no
more confusion with extended partitions). Command line parameters for
accessing advanced options (read-only operation etc.).

Partition Resizer is a small DOS executable, which requires no
installation, and can perform, all these tasks in a short while, giving
you the opportunity to re-arrange your partitions safely, quickly and
fuss-free.

You should be fine using the partitioner that comes with RedHat, etc.
Even as long ago as 1-1/2 years it was doing the job. I've installed
Linux on Windows boxes - 98se & 2000 - and install/partitioning went
flawlessly. Just defrag & then defrag again first. Perhaps a decent wine
in hand wouldn't be a bad thing. Ya never know.

thanks Mel......i will check it out.....A

A nice freeware tip: Have you tried an old (almost unknown prog) called
"H Menu"..(catorgory...launcher??? maybe)......written by a russian
programmer i think......i find it priceless.

bit frustrating working out how to configure but well worth it if you
like to work real efficiantly with everything you need just one click
away without an exra launcher window. You can configure the response
timing and sensitivity to mouse activation areas..

for some reason i think not too many people on this group have heard of
it yet .

I was wary about posting the details as i thought it might be common
knowledege and bore people.....but perhaps not......you will love it or
hate it...but i strongly recommend persisting with its configuration if
you find this confusing.

Note: i recommend NOT using the right hand side pop up bars as they get
in the way of windows controls and scrolling.

anouther nice tip i posted to this site::
http://www.freeware4u.com/modules/mydownloads/ (its real nice if you
like to wake up in the morning without a brain hemerage)....i have mine
in sync with a fade in light bulb.....hmmmmmmmmm

This website will be closed 22 april 2005.
The development of H-Menu is suspended.

Your last chance:
* Download the latest version: H-Menu 6.0 *

As far as I can tell H-Menu has not been mentioned in ACF before. Maybe
Susan can confirm? If the group feels this freeware program is worth
keeping maybe it'll find a new home.

I went to http://www.pricelesswarehome.org and did a search for H-Menu
and found no reference to it. In the future you can do the same before
posting to the group, or if you find a recent update that hasn't been
announced yet and announce the update.

You should search the acf newsgroup archive to find that info. There are
lots of apps that have been mentioned in posts that aren't listed on the
PWH web site.

Results 1 - 8 of about 9 for H-Menu group:alt.comp.freeware

http://groups.google.ca/groups?as_q....comp.freeware&as_scoring=d&lr=&num=100&hl=en

It pays to search for the URL for the home page and for alternate
spellings if you really, really want to find posts about an app. IOW -
search for both ZoneAlarm and Zone Alarm etc. etc.
