Idiot fries CPU (or tries to)..where now?

Admittedly a moment of complete stupidity: I managed to put the CPU
heatsink on a new Semperon 2800+ backwards causing the die to not
connect completely with the surface of the heatsink.

A couple of boots and a couple of CPU triggered shut-offs later the
penny finally dropped and I turned the bloody thing the right way round,
cleaned off the surfaces, added more thermal paste, and put it back
together.

Except on installing Windows XP, the system now hangs (BSOD just after
the initial blue "Copying Windows installation files screen" with the
error message DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL with couple of memory
locations in addition to specifically mentioning the file USBPORT.SYS).

Not wanting to leap to conclusions (the CPU could be alright, really) I
ran Memtest86. On two occasions, it gets to 68% total, and hangs 7%
into the random number sequence test. (Also ran this with USB completely
disabled, as read that this had caused problems for some people.)

Has anyone come across this behaviour in Windows / memtest before? Any
advice as to how to best troubleshoot this further would be greatly
apprecaited.

The system isn't quite a carcasse, as I sucessfully booted a Slax live
CD distro of Suse Linux 9.1 in an effort to provoke the system into some
signs of life, but boot success even with this isn't consistent.

What I'd like to know is regarding memtest: is this behaviour indicative
of more than just a memory problem? Have I wrecked the MB, or is there
a good chance that a new processor will breath life back into the system?

Config:
ASUS Terminator 1 Barebones (A7VT400) with latest BIOS 1002
Unbranded 1Gb DDR 400Mhz RAM (1 DIMM)
Semperon 2800 333Mhz FSB
Maxtor 80Gb HD

Cheers (alot) in advance,

Duncan

It could be the RAM causing that problem. Try a different 1GB or 512MB
module.

make sure the mem and CPU are in Sync...that is both are running at 333
FSB...not the CPU at 333 and the RAM at 400
