I bought a cheap video display adapter card and from the stick-on on the
back I cannot find anything about it as I need to download a driver for it.

The ticket on the back says "RIA2E4-BINV" and the card has what looks
like video out and S-Video out.

What is the board and what company owns it ?

Thanks!

I presume before you plug this card in, you've removed the old
video card drivers ? While the old video card is still in the
computer, remove the old drivers via Add/Remove.

Now, plug in the new video card. It will run at 640x480 or
800x600, some low resolution. Now, use a utility, like
Everest, or even the Device Manager, to get some more info
on the card.

If you can get some more info on the card by doing that,
and you still cannot figure it out, post another message,
with any text strings containing info on the card's hardware.

Would you believe I bought two cards for a ten UKP, different types with
the one that's now installed being an ATI Rage 128 Pro 32MB. TO keep
things neat I need to have the drivers for the other card before
anything goes wrong.

Many thanks Paul,

I'll do the utility checker tomorrow but I think I've found some details
on it; :-)

You are a better searcher than I am. I came up with nothing on
that label.

At least I could find a reference to Mr. Unwin :-)

I think there are days when some tenuous link can be found and other
days, and I know I've had them, when others find something that is just
there.

The three labels on the back have the following information;

RIA2D4-BINV
HK792-1 V3.1
12/01/2001 4756

S/N: R 0101003992

3892D180

It's got four Samsung chips and there's a legend with N622 with the
European mark of CE under that. There are a couple of other chips with
information on them but I'd have thought the labels would have thrown up
some light on the subject.

"Chaintech Desperado RIA2"

I would never have guessed RIA2 was part of a product name.

Thanks a lot Paul,

Sadly, I think we've hit a dead end!

<http://www.3dgrafikkarten.de/drivers_e.php3?Hersteller=Chaintech>

Clicking on the Win9x entry for 'Desperado AGP-RIA2 (GeForce2 MX)' takes
you to an outdated URL but clicking on the URL stated in the page gets
you to the Chaintech more up-to-date home page. It states that all
archive downloads should use their previous and older site. The only
problem is that the browser cannot find any archives and searches on the
newer site use the older site with the obvious response.

I used their tech support page and will wait.

Thanks again Paul.

You didn't want that driver anyway, it was bound to be very
old...

Go to http://www.nvidia.com and download the Detonator
driver (from the menu, "Graphics Driver", "Geforce and
TNT2", for your particular operating system). For example,
this is the current driver you'd want for WinXP,

Thanks a lot Lee for having a look!

Now, ( :-) ) click on the first board image, then on the next page click
on 'VGA Card Driver' to the right, then on the next page click on the
'NVIDIA VGA driver'. Select 'TAIWAN' the only download location and
then select the Windows 95/98/ME (or any version) and see if you get the
same result as me ?

I was turning into South Park's Cartman with the hissy fit I was going
into but I did email them to ask them why their archive pages are not
there. It would be interesting to find out if they actually do reply.
No wonder us Brit's are the worst at learning languages! I can't make
head nor tail of ???? or ???? or ???? ;-)

Let's see if DriverGuide.com has a copy ? No!

Thanks Kony,

I suppose it's a matter of reading up on the history of graphics boards
for that company as I'd have thought that one named driver (Detonator)
wouldn't work with a driver of another name.

Let's see what happens!

Richard.... I see what you mean!

I've been able to access their ftp site, but logging in with annonymous
and my email address doesn't work.

If you want to play with this....

If you wanted that particular one, take the link that fails, and
feed it to web.archive.org

http://web.archive.org/*/http://www.chaintech.com.tw/tw/download/FILES/AGP/nVidia/G42730W9X.exe

There is also a driver archive here, on the Nvidia web site.
