I have defined one identity to be used with personal mail and another to be
used with newsgroups. (My goal is to make it impossible for someone with my
newsgroup address to use it as a basis for sending me Spam.) My problem is
that every time I switch from my personal identity to my newsgroup identity,
I am met with an error message that says that it "cannot switch because an
application is running that cannot be interrupted". No hint is given of
what
the application might be. I've got no choice but to exit Outlook Express
and then reactivate it. When I get into Outlook Express again I find that
all of my listed newsgroups have been deleted. What's going on! How do I
deal with it. I'm working with Quicken 2003.

You don't need to use separate identities for this. Simply right click the
server in the list, select properties and use a munged e-mail address.
Spammers pick up the e-mail address from the newsgroup properties. You can
have one for your e-mail and use a different one on newsgroups simply by
changing your newsgroup properties as I've done with mine:
user@#notme.com
The address is bogus, any spam sent to it floats in cyberspace.
