Identifying ports in use

Ethereal reports that my client application (Firefox 1.0) selects a different port, from a small range, each time it is invoked. Thus I am unsure which ports to leave open and which to block.

Any suggestions on this dilemma?

You don't need to block anything in this case. Firefox does what web browsers
do and that is connect to servers (note that the used ports are not in
LISTENING state). There is no dillema or problem as far as I see from your
post. If you're building firewall rules then the only access you should be
blocking is to all UDP ports (unless you have an explicit reason to not do
so) and both inbound and outbound access for Windows (assuming you're on
Windows) services which listen for connections. Other than that you should
permit applications to make connections to the net.
