Identifying information from IP address

It's often easier to use a log file analyzer. There are lots of programs
that are designed to look at your files and determine all of this. As to how
deep you can get in the geographic information by yourself, it's a lot
trickier. A lot of the whois information is tied to the owner of the IP
address. For example, an IP address from MSN often shows up as coming from
Virginia as opposed to where the user may originally come from such as
California. A lot of the log file analyzers are good at identifying other
info, such as the name of the user's DSL or cable connection, like
sd.cox.net to come from San Diego.

How much information can I find out about a visitor based on their IP
address?

IOW, if I know a certain IP address has made page requests from my site, can
I tell where they are coming from.

For example, from an AOL server or a foreign ISP?

What level of detail is available and where would I go to get this
information?

Not much since the IP address would generally be that of the ISP, not the
specific person.

IP's are not exactly the 'net equivalent of phone numbers - it's a bit more
complicated than that.

Also, unless the visitor has IP, it is going to change each time they dial
in/connect.

It's in the message header.

| Cool. How could you know my IP address?
