It's often easier to use a log file analyzer. There are lots of programs
that are designed to look at your files and determine all of this. As to how
deep you can get in the geographic information by yourself, it's a lot
trickier. A lot of the whois information is tied to the owner of the IP
address. For example, an IP address from MSN often shows up as coming from
Virginia as opposed to where the user may originally come from such as
California. A lot of the log file analyzers are good at identifying other
info, such as the name of the user's DSL or cable connection, like
sd.cox.net to come from San Diego.
