identifying hardware

Hello.

Since a while I have a problem with some mysterious unidentified that
windows have
found. Whenever I reboot, it nags me displaying a notification that new
hardware is found, but I can't figure out what hardware it is referring
to and I can't find a driver either.
In the Device Manager it's listed as 'Unknown device'.
In the properties of this Unknown device, it's location is listed as
"on Intel(r) 82815 Graphics Controller".
I've tried downloading/updating with the drivers for the intel for the
82815 chipset, but that doesn't seem to work either.

Does anyone know how to identify what kind of hardware I'm dealing with
here and where to find a driver for it?

Thanks in advance and kind regards, Niek

Your BIOS battery (probably a 2032 lithium flat ) may be
dying, Or the graphics card on the mobo maybe bad.

Uninstall the unknown device then run the video driver set up. This should
install the drivers and if the device is truly an Intel(r) 82815 Graphic
Controller.

Doesn't work either. I can uninstall the driver, but when I try to
install the
driver for the intel chipset, it claims it is already installed on my
computer.
Then when I scan for hardware changes (or reboot), a notification comes
up again
about new hardware being found.

You need to download the video drivers only, since you already have the
chipset drivers installed.

You need to download the video drivers only, since you already have the
chipset drivers installed.

I thought they were both the same thing. The driver you mention (at
http://downloadfinder.intel.com/scr...ws*+XP+Professional&lang=eng&strOSs=44&submit
) is the one that tells me I already have it installed when I try to
install it.

From here:
http://downloadfinder.intel.com/scr...XP+Professional&lang=eng&strOSs=44&submit=Go!

Install number 3 first, that is the driver for chipset on the board then install number 2 this is
the graphics adapter drivers. The graphics adapter will not work properly without the inf files
installed first.

When I try to install number 3 it says:
"The current operating system supports the Intel chipset devices on
your system. No INF update is needed."

But I see now that when I try to install number 2, it says I already
have a newer driver installed. I installed the old driver anyway and
now
the 'unknown' hardware seems to be correctly installed (no more red or
yellow icons in the device manager).
I don't understand what kind of new hardware this is though and why it
was somehow suddenly detected (I didn't add any new hardware or
anything and no software either as far as I can tell).

It has installed two 'Unknown' devices listed as:
Intel(r) AIM External Flat Panel Driver 8
Intel(r) AIM External TV Encoder Driver 2

Well... anyways... the nagging about new hardware being found is gone
so that settles it for me. Thanks everyone for all the hints.
