Identify target device to ensure license

[Sorry if you're seeing this doubly, our news server appears to be
broken.]

For update or recovery images, the MS license for XPE imposes "to
ensure the the image executes solely on the applicable Embedded System"
and will "not function, download or install on the Embedded System
until a commercially reasonable authentication process of the Embedded
System is performed".

I would very much like to know what options there are to ensure this.
What do you use?

Another thought on this: In MSDN, there is a technical article
"Creating an Embedded Recovery CD by Using Windows PE and SDI". I fail
to recognize in how far this solution "will not function, download or
install" on an unlicensed target device type (let alone a particular
/instance/ of the given device type). OK, vital components may not be
included with the image, so the device won't run. But the CD, as
described, would at a minimum /install/ the image, which would already
violate the license conditions.

Am I just missing something?
