I need to find out what process has a file open.

There are plenty of tools (I use Process Explorer) that let you select a
process, and show you the files it has open.

But I want the opposite. I want to select a file and then find out what
process is using it.

Anyone???

mst IsUsedBy for W2K and above

a software tool which you can use to determine what process on your
system has a particular file open. This is important, for example, if
you want to copy or delete a file and you don't know why it isn't
working.

You have to be administrator to install and use this program.

Dear Lester,

You mean something like Process View?
http://www.xmlsp.com/pview/prcview.htm

A very simple prog.
You can open a box with open windows ("applications") and one for all dlls
that are loaded. If you click on any item in those, the process using them
is highlighted in the main programme window.

Maybe you could move/rename the file and see what program/process complains
that it cannot find the file?

The download link is broken.

I use Process Explorer, too. I didn't know that it would do what I want.

Now I know. Thanks.

Wow. This tool works even for the laziest of us!
Just drag and look.
Thanks.

Try WhoLockedMe (for XP/2K)
Home Page : http://www.dr-hoiby.com/WhoLockMe/

direct download: http://www.dr-hoiby.com/WhoLockMe/WhoLockMe104.zip

ScreenShot : http://www.dr-hoiby.com/WhoLockMe/SnapShot.gif

It adds an entry in the context menu, "WhoLockedME ?". If you select
this entry and the file is locked, you get a message with the file
name.
Does not work for all files open, if you open a .txt file with notepad
you will not be warned.

Although the program may meet your definition of freeware, it sure
doesn't mine. From the EULA:

"This SOFTWARE PRODUCT is a free version (freeware), which may be used
until modified license stipulations prohibit such use. You are obligated,
at least once per year, to inquire with mst software, Martin Stiemerling
as to whether a modified version of the freeware license agreement exists
and furthermore to familiarize yourself with any such modified
stipulations."

This seems to me to be a bastardization of the term "freeware". Basically
he's saying "you can use it until I say you can't".

No thanks.

I guess that's, so when it goes payware, the author can
retroactively change his/her mind on the beta testers, err ah, I
mean freeware users.

Yup - arrrrrggggggghhhhhhhhhh . . . what a crock . . .

Perhaps ACF should consider creating a ware category *just* for this
program . . .

besides the categories it's already in -> trialware and
theAuthorIsAnIdiotware . . . ;)

Suggestions?
