Identical Computer Names on Multiple Partitions

Hi,

I am building a PC with three partitions. On each
partition, is it OK if the computer name be the same for
each OS, while they are on the same domain? What if the
OSs are different versions of Windows, i.e. Win2K Server,
Windows XP Pro and Longhorn?

Thanks

You will likely have problems if each 'rendition' of that computer name is
joined to a domain is the first thought that comes to mind.

No that isn't alright. You can't join them all to the same domain with the same
name.

By each rendition, do you mean each version of the OS?
What if the OSs are the same?

Thanks

Each install of the OS. Supposing each install of Windows had all named the
same name for the machine. If he were to boot into Windows and join each to
the same domain this would reset the machine account each time.

Once that was done if you booted back into the first install to be joined to
the domain, the secure channel session setup would have failed as an access
denied. A reset would be required (or a disjoin or rejoin).

Hopefully I haven't muddied the water on that explanation. Please post if
this doesn't explain it well.

What if you join the first partition to the domain and
then clone from the first partition to the other
partitions? Would this resolve the restting of the
machine account?

Thanks

Nope, each instance needs its own machine account. It might work for a little
while but at some point the passwords would go out of sync.

Joe's correct, each instance needs it's own machine account (and name).

Hi, Tim,

In regard to your reply: "Supposing each install of

Why will I get access denied when trying to boot back into
the first install of Windows, after having joined the
second install of Windows to the domain? Is it because AD
notices a a computer with the same PC name but a different
machine account than the second-installed Windows? And AD
requires that a PC name always have one machine account
associated with it?

If I clone a hard drive to a second hard drive, and then
leave the first hard drive offline, will I encounter
problems if I use the the second hard drive in the same
domain as the first hard drive?

Thanks

Each machine instance will at some point have a different password.

Why do you want to do this so badly?
