IdeChnDr.sys Crash & rebooting, intel application accelerator, chk

I appreciate any help. My perfectly well functioning 4 year old P4 WinXP
Home machine has been crashing and rebooting by itself when I run Norton
Virus Scan, Win Defender, and sometimes for no particular reason that I can
explain while using IE. The Microsoft Online Crash Analysis that ocmes up
says, "the Error is likely caused by InTel Storage Driver, IdeChnDr.sys

I have read that some with this problem have solved it by removing Intel
application accelerator, but when I try to do so through Control Panel
Add/Remove Programs, I get an eror message: The InstllShield Engine
(iKernal.exe) could not be launched. No such interface supported. " Is
there some other way to remove it and is that really advisable in the first
place? How might it affect my machine?

I have run Microsoft Windows Memory Test, and there does not seem to be any
problem with the RAM--2 500MB cards.

I was able to drag the hard drive without a problem.

When I tried to run chkdsk, I got about 30% done and I heard a strange sort
of "grinding" sound that has become a familiar sound from the hard drive just
before these crashes, which leads to an automatic reboot.

I removed Win Defender, but problem persists. I have been using Norton IS
2006 without problems for a couple of years.

I also checked inside the cabinet and all fans are working. I cleaned out
some minor dust.

So mavens, what do you suggest I do next? Could it be a bad sector on the
hard drive, requiring it to be replacerd. Is it possible to repair it?
Could it be a virus, spyware, etc despite my diligent efforts to keep the
machine clean from such contagion? Is it just a sign that this machine ought
to be replaced with one of those blistering fast Core2 Duos or newer Intel
Extremes?

Thanks, in advance, for your help.

what version if IAA are you running, and why?

you only need it if running RAID, and the versions prior to 3.5 (the
non-raid versions) are old and unneccesary w/ XP. Read up at the intel
site. I would uninstall it (or install and then uninstall if you can't
get add/remove to work), and install the latest INF drivers for your
chipset. USE CAUTION and do a tad of research if possible before hand,
check mobo maker and their forum for EXACT advice for you system. [Is it
a Dell? They loved shipping w/ IAA for some reason, not really needed. It
did help w/ Win98, no value w/ XP].

That sounds bad bad bad! backup all personal docs NOW!

change restart behaviour in My Comp | Prop | Advanced | Startup and
Recovery to NOT restart automatically, so you'll see a bluescreen prior to
a reboot. You DO want a log entry made too.

Bad sectors are handled automatically by the HD, until it runs out of
spares, then it's essentially ka-put, and XP itself will start to manage
the bad sectors - at that point you are in pretty deep! a HD w/ SMART
will report the impending failure, check if you have a SMART drive and
reporting tool (norton has a SMART util in its suite, part of System
Doctor as I recall (one of its "guages" is SMART info)).

Good Luck
