IDE to SATA migration - Acronis or what?

Old system has XP SP2, IDE 40 Gig and 110 Gig; C and D drives, no
additional partitions. Many applications installed, some in c:\Program
Files and some in d:\ program files.

New system will have fresh XP install and 320 G SATA. Motherboard
supports IDE and SATA. Building it up as a bare bones...... purchased
new XP with system - not installed yet.

Acronis seems to have a tool to do this...... or can I back up (make
an image) of the 2 drives to an external USB or network drive? It
looks like Acronins will back up the OS, but then I end up with all
the drivers from the old system, not the new fresh install on the new
system........

Will Acronis true image allow me to connect the IDE drive(s) from the
old system and migrate it to the new system, preserving application
settings, registry values, etc.? How does Acronis resolve settings in
the registry (new system registry will be dramatically different from
old, but applications will be the same). I hate the thought of
re-installing all the apps that are on the old system. I understand
activation or re-activation will be required.

Should I create a partition on the new drive (as D) and connect both
drives to the ide port before starting?

Is there a step-by-step process to accomplish this?

I have not purchased Acronis 10 yet.

You can "clone" your IDE drive to your SATA drive.......then install SATA
into new system.
When you start for 1st time have the XP Cd in place and perform a "repair"
installation.This will correct the drivers needed for the new mobo.You will
also need the SATA drivers on a floppy.Once that is up and running then its
time to install the mobo drivers off the CD that came with your mobo....and
the drivers for any other new devices.

Grover, I have been using TrueImage for over three years now. Here's what
I've found:

TrueImage does, in fact, makes a "true image" -- that is to say, with the
exception of partition structure, it *totally* ignores the content of the
drive.

If the manufacturer of your new motherboard has provided a bootable CD with
the motherboard you can, in all likelihood, accomplish your goal. Assuming
that the old motherboard does not support SATA, the steps I would take are as
follows:

1) For insurance purposes, make a full backup of your IDE drives onto a USB
or network drive.

2) Install the old drives in the new system. Boot the new system with the
CD in place and enter BIOS setup to ensure that the CD drive is "The First
Boot Drive". By doing this you can install all the drivers appropriate for
the new motherboard.

3) Remove the CD and reboot the system. XP will, in all likelihood, notice
the change in hardware and require you to reactivate. Do so (this may
require a telephone call to Microsoft).

4) At this point, you can use TrueImage to either, "Clone" or "Add a New
Disk" (or a combination of those two) functions to make the SATA drive your
new system disk.

Note: I have never tried cloning two drives onto one but I think it works.
If it does not then you can take a "Full Backup" of the two drives (if you
have space on one of them if not, on a USB or network drive) and then restore
that image to the SATA drive.

After having done the above, you can remove the two IDE drives from the new
system and you will be where you wanted to be.

It will not work as you want.

You cannot partially transfer an installed Windows (e.g. registry data
& installed apps) to another installation.

You can use Acronis to image your existing drives to the new one. You
will then end up with a 30 gb (C:) and a 110 gb partition (D:) on the
new drive plus approximately 180 gb of unallocated disk space.

Then you could use a Partitioning utility (perhaps Acronis can do this
but I always use BootItNG (www.bootitng.com) for this aspect) to move
and resize the partitions on the new hard drive so they are the sizes
that you want them to be.

Finally you can boot the new computer with your new Windows XP
installation CD and do a Repair Install as per

That will give you your installed apps etc. on the new machine.

If you don't want the new drive to be split into two partitions then
you will need to do something different, and that will probably
involve a lot of reinstalling of application programs etc, especially
any that are on your present D: drive.
