IDE to HDD Connections

I have a query rather than a problem. I have a Chaintech Motherboard Model
No:- ES-676M. In the users manual that came with the computer it says that
the IDE cable connections should be with the BLUE to Motherboard, GRAY to
Master and BLACK to Slave.

I have 2 HDD installed, a Western Digital 40Gb (set as Master) that came
with the computer and a Maxtor 20Gb (set as slave) that I have added. In
both the Western and Maxtor manuals they say that the BLACK be connected to
Master and the GREY to Slave,

I have tried both connections and each seem to work well but would like to
know for my own information the correct set up and if it makes any real
difference. Also is there any advantage to just use cable select and let the
computer sort it out?

Thanks.

I've been told the master should be on the end which would be the black.
But in my experience it hasn't made a lot of difference.
The advantage with cable select is when you swap a drive you
just jumper it cable select and you don't have to check if the old
drive was jumpered master or slave.

I don't think it matters in the least which of the three connectors you
plug into the motherboard, the master or the slave.

Am I hearing you right?
If you plug the master or slave connector in the motherboard you'll
have a hard time connecting two drives. Don't know if any drives would
have a problems or not.

Greetings --

The electrons passing through the cables don't care what color the
connectors are. Such things might make a difference on some systems
that use Cable Select to determine the boot priority of the drives,
but it normally doesn't matter.
